There are fundamental principles for problem analysis and algorithm design that are continuously used in bioinformatics. This book concentrates on a clear presentation of these principles, presenting them in a self-contained, mathematically clear and precise manner, and illustrating them with lots of case studies from main fields of bioinformatics (e.g. sequencing and mapping, string storage and manipulation, pattern matching, alignment, gene identification, genome rearrangement, structure prediction, regulatory networks, pseudoknot detection). Emphasis is laid on algorithmic "pearls" of bioinformatics, showing that things may get rather simple when taking a proper view into them. The book closes with a thorough bibliography, ranging from classic research results to very recent findings, providing many pointers for future research. Overall, this volume is ideally suited for a senior undergraduate or graduate course on bioinformatics, with a strong focus on its mathematical and computer science background.

Scott Mallon is perhaps best known for his YouTube channel, An American in Bangkok. As an expat living in Thailand since November 1995, he has also worked as a boxing and travel photojournalist for numerous publications, including HBO Sports, the Bangkok Post, The Ring, Boxing Digest, Boxing News, the P. Gazette and Macleans Magazine. He is a past member of the Boxing Writers Association of America, Ring Magazine’s Rating Panel, Yahoo’s Boxing Rating Panel and was formerly the editor of Asian Boxing News. In 2007, the Boxing Writers Association of America awarded him with an honorary mention for investigative reporting. He lives in Bangkok full-time with his Thai wife Beau, their sons Alex and Nicholas, and dogs Lala and Odie.

For all of us, reading about others is fascinating. We're curious about how others lived and we're interested in the play of their personalities against the events of their times. For these reasons biographies are popular literature. One of the best is Adela Rogers St. Johns' story of her father, Earl Rogers, an outstanding criminal lawyer in Los Angeles in the early 1900s. Adela seems to have grown up in her father's law office and tagged along with him everywhere except when he was carousing. She had an eye for detail, a good memory and, because she was a professional writer, she tells an incomparable story. Much of the book is about of Rogers' battles with the DAs, his problems with his wife, and his friendship with John Barleycorn. While he won almost all the former encounters and drew with his wife, he slowly lost all to the bottle. An episode in that defeat led to one of the most moving scenes in the book and, I think, Rogers' greatest cross examination. It occured when Adela sought to have her Dad committed to a sanitarium so he could dry out. He asked for a hearing. Rogers defended himself and Adela had to testify against him from the witness chair in a courtroom. After she'd made her case and it was his turn to cross examine, Rogers told the judge, "Only a question or two." Geting up from the counsel table and approaching Adela, he said, "Nora (his affectionate name for her) Look at me please." Reluctantly she did. "Nora... do you really think I'm crazy?" he asked. "No, Papa," she said shaking her head, "Oh no, no..." "Then do you really want to go on with this?" Rogers asked, holding up a copy of the commitment papers filed with the court. "Do you really want to have me locked up?" "No, Papa," she said and burst into tears. If you want more about Earl Rogers and a less subjective view, look for "Take the Witness," written by Alfred Cohn and Joe Chisholm, reporters who followed Rogers' career. It validates his daughter but is only a ho-hum read.

gripping book

It's been a few years since I've read this book, but I still remember it as one of the most interesting nonfiction books I've read. A biography of a famous lawyer written by his daughter. When Clarrence Darrow (of the infamous "Scopes Trial" about teaching evolution in schools) himself needed a lawyer, Earl Rogers was who he chose. And Rogers was that good (I guess the modern-day equivalent is Gerry Spence). The book follows a few of his trials and it's a really gripping read. Although it may be a little hard tracking it down, you won't regret doing so.

A Helpful Milestone for non-Muslim Readers Seeking to Understand Islam's Central Prophet

In this second decade of the century, we have a chance to read some remarkably mature new books on Islam, the Prophet Muhammad's legacy and the whole host of issues that were raised so explosively on 9/11/2001. As a journalist covering these issues, I collected the scores of books produced in the years immediately following 9/11--some of them good, some of them politically biased and some of them absolutely dreadful. Beyond pure bias, the haste in which many books were produced led to tragic inaccuracies and limitations in authors' perspectives.

Unfortunately, the non-Muslim world still is desperately seeking information about Islam largely because of continuing violence linked to individuals and groups claiming to represent the faith.

Whatever factors led to HarperOne's decision to publish "Memories of Muhammad," the fact is that this book ranks as a milestone for non-Muslim readers. Dr. Safi is professor of Islamic studies at the University of North Carolina and he serves as the chair of the Study of Islam at the American Academy of Religion.

He's a Muslim scholar writing for general readers from the wealth of his authority as an academic. Looking over the stacks of books available about Islam, he correctly identified the Prophet Muhammad as a central point of confusion for non-Muslims and produced this book to help guide us in understanding the significance of this major religious figure.

Unique approach

I enjoyed readings this book a lot for a number of reasons:

[a] it is not a typical description of Muhammad's biography and important events in Muslim history. Omid Safi described/analyzed major events by contextualizing them. For example, it does not just talk about when one of the major events in Muslim history took place. He sheds light into why it happened, what were its precursors, as well as immediate and long term implications for Muslim and non-Muslim world;
[b] Omid Safi makes great attempt to associate/relate major events in Muslim history with other world religions, Judaism, Christianity and Buddhism;
[c] Though it is easy to grasp Shia-inclination, I liked how Omid Safi attempted to explain centuries-long tension between Sunni and Shia Muslims;
[d] The style and structure of the book is unprecedented. For example, one of the sub-titles reads "Muhammad, Eric Clapton, and the Tale of Layla and Majnun"...

Please don't be discouraged that Omid Safi's book includes some depictions of major events in Muslim history. One of the reviews refers to this fact and apparently that made him give 1 out of 5. But that's the problem Muslims have. We don't look at the substance and overrule something based on what someone said or what illustrations it includes... I am Sunni Muslim and yet enjoyed reading this book very much, AND would gladly read new pieces of scholarship by Omid Safi.

To understand Islam, know its prophet

This book should be a required reading for Muslims and for Non-Muslims who want to understand prophet and how and why Muslims adore him more than their own parents. Once I started reading the book, I could not put it down. At the same time there were several sections of the book, where I had to stop reading so I can ponder and absorb the beauty in this book.

Without being overly zealous Omid Safi gives arguments about need of humanity to believe in God. To quote from the book "In the begnining we imagine God to be a slightly better version of ourselves, then the comforter of all that is missing from our lives, and then a king, before we finally realize that God is the Ultimate, the One, the perfection of Love, Majesty, and Beauty." God tells Muhammad PBUH "My heaven cannot contain me, nor can my Earth. But the heart of my faithful servant contains me". The one line which touched me the most from the book is "You can not know yourself without knowing God. You can not know God without knowing yourself."

He forcefully makes the point that the prophet Muhammad was sent as the mercy to all the worlds. He reminds Muslims to practice compassion and justice practiced by the last prophet to mankind. He mentions "For me, Muhammad represents the completion of the possibilities available to us as human beings, not because he is a superhuman, but precisely because he embodies the meaning of what it means to be fully human." Author refers an incident from the life of the prophet "on the way to Mecca, Muhammad saw a female dog that had given birth to a new litter of pups. Concerned that the commotion of an army ot ten thousand might disturb them, Muhammad bid one of his followers to stand guard over them, sheltering them"

Omid safi has done a beautiful job describing the Miraj (heavenly ascension) of the prophet, "Without the Miraj, Muhammad is the Warner who is sent to admonish society to abandon its heathen ways and return to God's path. With the Miraj, Muhammad also charts a path for humanity to ascend to the Divine." In another place Omid Safi summarizes the Quranic call of living by noting that "how one lives in the midst of humanity is related to how one sees God, and vice & versa. Theology and humanity are forever linked". Author reminds the readers " we can ascend to a height and a level of intimacy with God that angels dare not attempt".

Talking about war and violence "The Quran attests that Muhammad was predisposed by nature to despise war, but that God commanded him to undertake it when necessary: "Fighting is ordained for you, even though it be hateful to you Quran 2:216. The Quran emphasizes that when one has to confront enemy - those who, in the words of scripture, have driven one from one's home and oppressed a whole community- then the fighting must be undertaken in a noble fashion, with set bounds not to be exceeded." "And fight in God's cause against those who wage war against you, but do not commit aggression- for verily, God does not love aggressors. Quran 2:190"

On topic of social activism of the prophet author refers the spiritual practice of the prophet to link inner reflection with social action. He also mentions verses from the Quran regarding alleviating poverty in society, Quran 2:177 and one of the prophet's saying "Food for one person suffices two persons, and food for two persons suffices four persons, and food for four persons suffices eight persons".

For the first time I read different ways prophet is revered by different groups of Muslims (Sunni, Shia and Sufi). Omid Safi quotes Ali, the first male convert to Islam and one of the greatest Muslims (4th Caliph for Sunnis and 1st Imam for Shias) "I marvel at the creation of humanity: The human sees through a clear veil (the eye), speaks through a piece of meat, hears through a bone and cartilage, and breathes through a narrow opening". Author describes in brief the sacrifices of the grandson of the prophet when he with his family bravely fought against tyranny of the ruler Yazid. How he gave up everything (life of most of his family member and his own) and showed to Muslims how not to bow against tyranny and injustice, whatever the cost maybe.

Finally the author rues the fact that modern Muslims are neglecting the cosmic aspect of the prophet and are emphasizing the role of the prophet as a community leader and social engineer & wahhabi influence has destroyed many of the physical memories of the prophet including his place of birth etc. In the end he quotes Iqbal the famous Urdu poet from South Asia "Love of the prophet runs like blood in the veins of his community".

To understand Islam and Muslims, you have to understand the life of the prophet Muhammad from authentic sources. Other great works are by Muhammad: His Life Based on the Earliest Sources and In the Footsteps of the Prophet: Lessons from the Life of Muhammad.

Wide-ranging, well organized

The authors use a strict definition of "computer architecture": the set of features accessible to the programmer, irrespective of implementation or technology. Having defined the topic, they then set out on a meticulously organized presentation, covering a huge number of variations of instruction set, data representations, and organization of visible features. A hierarchical tree describing features and alternatives unifies the presentation. Presented just a few nodes at a time, references to other parts of the tree in other sections of the book make the huge mass of information approachable.

A second characteristic also makes this book's presentation distinctive. Formal definitions in machine-readable form spell out the details of architectural features: memory structure, floating point formats, instruction behavior, and so on. Given enough detail, this approach could be used to model the processor and run hypothetical programs on it without having to create actual hardware. This formal approach is especially helpful in the later sections of the book, the "zoo" section that describes and compares a number of well-known processor families.

Despite the huge amount of information, clear presentation, and breadth of real-world examples, this book's shortcomings limit its value for most kinds of readers. The choice of APL as hardware description language is at least idiosyncratic for a book published in 1997. APL has a long tradition as hardware description language in the 1960s, but its arcane notation had fallen out of favor in general computing long since. That's just a quirk, though.

More seriously, I find the lack of implementation discussion to be a positive hindrance. In many cases, architectural decisions are based on technological capabilities and constraints, but that whole range of discussions just can't happen within this framework. The RISC vs CISC topic, for example, makes sense only in terms of implementation technology, and never appears in those words. Out of order vs. in-order execution should also be part of an architect's repertoire, but just vanishes into the "implementation" abyss. For student computer architects, the goal would be to learn to construct the features described, not just to know their named and alternatives. Coming from the other side, I saw little mention of the compiler or operating system technologies that put their own pressures on processor architecture.

Then, even within its stated range of topics, I find a number of startling omissions. Perhaps one skilled enough at reading between the lines could deduce Harvard architectures, with separate code and data spaces, and possibly different word widths in each. I'd call that a non-obvious stretch, though. Many other omissions stand out, once the first few appear, including VLIW architectures, other architectures with multiple memories (like X and Y operands in some DSPs), delayed branches and other pipeline-related features (esp. MIPS), register windowing and associated management issues, memory alignment, details related to memory mapping, or features needed to support virtualization. In a discussion of processor families, it would have been helpful to mention ways for less-capable family members to execute complex instructions (like division or floating point) in a binary-compatible way, without actually implementing those instructions. All of these architectural features existed in commercially important processors long before the book's publication date, but I didn't see mention anywhere.

Also, the world has moved forward since this book's 1997 publication. We have GPUs now, and hardware threading, and multicores, and systems-on-chip, and massively parallel supercomputers, each with unique features and needs. I can't fault the book for being a product of its time, but modern readers need information that just wasn't available in 1997.

So, I wanted to like this book. I do like it, as far as it goes - I like it a lot. I just find it too limiting to use it as a sole text in any class I'd want to teach or to take.

An outstanding book for the serious computer architect.

This 1000-page book is a tour-de-force of computer architecture design principles. I learned from and then taught several graduate computer science classes using the manuscript several years ago, and have always considered it to be the definitive work in the field. It certainly guided my work in co-architecting the Alpha computer systems.
While at first brush many of the examples seem dated (the book only discusses the first computer in a series, such as the 8086 rather than the Pentium), upon further reflection one realizes that the design principles are instead timeless.
This book is longer than "War and Peace" and is not a light read, but many buyers will keep and use it for a lifetime.

Much deeper than a mere Computer Architecture text

I took Fred Brooks' Advanced Computer Architecture course years ago in graduate school. My father said, quite correctly, that it was like taking a theology course from Jesus. This book, in its then-preprint form, was the text, and I eventually wore my photocopied version out completely. (Thank goodness it finally came out in conventional binding.)
I am now a software architect, doing internet work in Java. I don't think I can work for an hour without referring to some concept that Fred taught in the course, or in this book.
Read it. Study it. The only thing that could be better would be to take the course from Fred.

Watch for typos

I am an English instructor of ESL students, many who are preparing for the Toefl exam. I have reviewed 5 books myself before recommending students buy one. While this book appears to be well organized, WATCH OUT!!! It is loaded with typos and errors from the start.

For example, in the Model Test 1: Pretest, I counted 11 errors in just 5 pages!!!

For example, They indicate which paragraph to read, and have them numbered incorrectly (1 and 2 are ok, but they have questions for paragraph 5 and there are only 4 paragraphs!)

Vocabulary words on the test should be highlighted, but they missed one, so a student has to search for it in the paragraph, thus wasting valuable time for a timed test.

For the question asking the student to insert a sentence, the correct answer is "C" and the answer key has the correct answer as "B" - which is NOT correct!! Then they go on to say why B is correct, while explaining the answer response for "C". This is just careless and unforgivable for a test publisher!

On one answer - where three choices are required - they list the correct choices as: "E, F and D". Fine, but why not make it: D, E, and F?

The Toefl test is difficult enough for ESL students, and I would NEVER recommend a book that makes the test literally impossible and so confusing.

The Princeton books are so far, my top picks.

Value for money

The book had adequate examples to practice, some good study tips and exam strategies. I got a 110 in my TOEFL exam. It was the most cost-efficient.

The most confusing thing while buying the book was Barron publishes 3 versions of this book - with audio CD, with CD ROM and only the book. The audio CD version contains audio for all listening sections but no computer-based tests / scoring. I believe the CD ROM version has that.

Other things that would be good to have:

- a feature to record your speaking section (available with Longman)

- a feature to record your written skills and get an automated evaluation.

A Must-Have for anyone who is serious about a good score!

I agree with the previous comment about how daunting it is to pick the right book to purchase in the beginning - I chose the Barron's edition with audio CDs and McGraw Hill's ETS standard edition. The latter was helpful in evaluating one's own speaking level against real life examples, but the former was far superior in its content layout and diversity of subjects covered. In my opinion study tips & tricks will never be as effective as actually sitting model tests under simulated environment repetitively. I highly recommend running the full listening/speaking section all the way without stopping (except for the writing sections within those sections) as this will give you more rigorous practice than those offered in the actual test where you get to pause after each question.

I spent two weeks on this book and an afternoon skimming through official ETS test prep book, and scored 115 out of 120.

Gave me hope.

Very inspiring, about the "right" relationship with Jesus (we don't need more money, etc, but more of HIM) and that God will send MY right man someday if I wait on him. I'm 28, I think Ann said she was 36. I hope I don't have to wait too much longer but we'll see, won't we. God's timing is perfect and he works in ways WE certainly don't understand. Thanks Ann. I'm looking for more of your books but after checking at bookstores they're out of print. Written any new ones? What are you doing now? How's Will? I really loved your book and still have notes I took which I hold very dear. Made me feel like I knew you personally. Thanks again. If anybody is looking for guidance and direction as a single woman in your walk with God and wondering if there is a man out there for you, please read Ann's book. You'll be blessed.

The book I loan out the most (of all the books I own)

I just found out that someone very dear to me died.

Many years ago someone handed me a book and said "You should read this." The impact of that single book on my life is more than I can actually explain. As a young unmarried woman, I poured over the pages of "I Gave God Time" with tears of joy and hope as I saw God working in the author's life through the pages of a book. I came to believe that I could trust God with my future. That I could give God time to give me a husband if and when He saw fit and serve Him in no matter where He moved me. In some small part, the author was influential in my marriage to my husband, in my willingness to wait for the right one, trusting God to show me the way.

The other thing that struck me about her was her insatiable desire for God. It was like a yearning that could never be filled, a fire that could never be quenched. I knew that feeling! No one had ever put into words how I felt. No one described my yearning for God quite so succinctly as she did.

Though I never met her and really didn't know much about her (til I looked her up today), I feel as if I have lost a near and dear friend.

Isn't it amazing how a book can do that? With the stroke of a pen or the clicking of a keyboard, an author becomes part of who you are, influencing the direction of your life in ways you (and probably she) never imagined.

All these things came back to me today as I read of her death. And it renewed all the more my desire to write, to share, to touch others as she and so many other authors have touched me.

I will meet you one day, Ann Kiemel Anderson, and I will tell you how you influenced a young girl's future for the Kingdom of God.

I will see you on the Other Side.

"I GAVE GOD TIME"

I first read this book in 1984. At that time I was a thirty year old woman, active in her church and unmarried. Beliving God for a mate and children in time.
I was frustrated because growing up in a Christian home with strong teaching about
living a Chirst -centered life, I was taught that God would send me a SAVED HUSBAND!
WHEN I WAS A TEENAGER, AND IN MY TWENTIES, I DIDN'T WORRY ABOUT A HUSBAND.
But now in my thirties, my BIOLOGICAL CLOCK was ticking and still no husband and NO PROSPECTS!
I read that book, and immediately I dismissed it and felt, that will not be me. I want to be married nOw! little did i know it would be twenty years before i actually did marry. I am so gratful to the author Ann Kiemel-Anderson. when i was married six years ago I remembered how God used that book to encourage me to "GIVE HIM TIME" THANK YOU MRS. ANDERSON, FOR REMINDING THE SINGLES WHO ARE STILL WAITING TO HOLD-ON! Michele E.Churn-Price

The Story of Zbyshek Kustrzynski, Tucks escape buddy.

I grew up in Montreal West, Quebec, in the 1960s and was best friends with the son of Zbygniew "Zbyshek" Kustryzynski, the Polish fighter pilot who escaped from Stalag Luft III with Tuck.
Mr. K., as we called him, was a plant manager for Dominion Textile being a chemist by profession. He was a tall, muscular man with a deep bass voice and a twinkle in his blue eyes. He wore thick black horn rimmed glasses which had hearing aids in each arm for each ear because his eardrums had been punctured during one of his crash landings. He had a long scar which went from the right side of his forehead, down across his strong nose to his left cheek. This was the scar he got in September 1939 when he crash landed his Polish biplane in Bulgaria after the Polish high command ordered all their fighter pilots to flee the unstoppable German war machine. They were told to get to England where the British would get them flying again to continue the fight against the Germans. Zbyshek told us how he had to hold his service pistol to the head of a local doctor while he sewed up his shattered face because the terrified physician wanted to flee from the advancing German army. The local underground resistance fighters managed to get him to Greece where a boat took him up to England.
He and many other Poles trained on Hurricanes for the Battle of Britain which had started in July 1940. He was put on active fighter duty on September 1st and flew in the Battle for a little over 3 weeks with the British squadrons. I personally made photo copies of his official RAF logbook which show that he was rotated up to Scotland at the end of September due to "battle fatigue." The log book shows he had 15 certified kills registered in that three week period, the most intense period of the Battle of Britain. (I have attached a photo of his log book page here.) He was awarded the British DFC and the Polish K.W. medals for this service.
He was retrained to fly Spitfires and started flying "rhubarbs" over France like Tuck did and, also like Tuck, was shot down by ground fire near St. Omer, France in April 1942. I have a book called "Spitfire" by Alfred Price which has a photo taken by Germans of his broken Spitfire being loaded onto a flat bed trailer by German army personnel. He was "captured" sitting in the crash landed Spitfire, his back having been broken in the crash. He recuperated in POW camp strapped to a door while his spine healed up. He escaped when he was well enough and was recaptured and put in Colditz Castle POW camp with British commando prisoners. He told us that they stayed in shape by fighting and wrestling regularly in preparation for escape attempts. I saw a photo of him taken with other prisoners looking depressed and glowering with pent up rage at being a POW. He was transferred to Stalag Luft III when he was caught trying to escape again. This was the high security prison for the "most difficult" POWs and this is where he met Tuck. Because the stalag was on the German Polish border, Zbyshek knew exactly where they were and when they managed to escape, he led Tuck across Poland to the Russian lines where they were captured by battle crazed Russian "muzhiks" who wanted to kill them for their boots and the gold in their teeth. Fortunately, Zbyshek spoke Russian because he had grown up in Moscow for the first 8 years of his life as his father was a Polish diplomat there in the teens during World War I. He told the Russian soldiers that he was an American fighter pilot pointing to the Polish eagle on his officer's hat saying it was an American eagle. He knew if the Russians knew he was really Polish, they would probably have killed him on the spot. This ruse caused enough confusion for the battle weary Russian peasant soldiers that they called an officer to take over the British and "American" pilot escapees. They were processed and sent to Vladivostok where they then sailed back around to England. They were emaciated and sick from deprivation and infection by the time they got back to England and were put in hospital where Zbyshek met Zosia (Sophia). She was a Polish nurse who had escaped from Poland with her doctor father and served as a nurse with the British 8th Army in North Africa during the campaign against Rommel. Field Marshall Montgomery had promised her and her three Polish nursing compatriots safe passage to England after they had nursed thousands of British soldier casualties during Battle of North Africa to wait out the rest of the war.
I saw a personal photo of an emaciated Zbyshek down on one knee, arms outspread, singing O Chichornya to Zosia in the hospital as he was courting her in the true tradition of the "amorous Poles". Zbyshek finished the war on P-51 Mustangs scoring another 3 kills before VE day.
She and Zbyshek were married and came to Canada after the war ended. In 1956, he received an autographed copy of "Fly for Your Life!" from Tuck with a hand written letter from him jokingly asking him to forgive the "literary license" that Forrester had taken with many of the facts of their escapades together.
Both he and Zosia were unassuming, quiet yet elegant people who you never would have guessed were titans of their time and the war. At Zbyshek's funeral in Pointe-Claire, Quebec, in 1996, five of his surviving Polish Battle of Britain fighter pilot friends dressed in blue blazers, gray trousers and full medals saluted as one in military style under their flag bidding farewell to one of the heroes of the 20th century. He was 85 when he passed away. Zosia passed away 5 years later. I still derive inspiration from their memory to persevere through difficult moments in life reminding myself that my problems are but a pittance compared to what they and their generation survived to live a new life another day.

One of the outstanding members of the greatest generation. Forrester looks at Tuck's pre-RAF life indentifying some of the factors that made him such a superlative fighter pilot, and squadron leader. Most of the great fighter pilots tend to be lone wolf types, but Tuck also had qualities that let him take a depressed unit (257 Squadron) in the middle of the Battle of Britain, learning a new aircraft (Hawker Hurricane having previously been one of the RAFs first Spitfire pilots), and in the midst of that conflict make them an effective fighting force.
His talent was squandered by Fighter Command leader Sholto Douglas's decision to conduct pointless fighter sweeps over France which cost the British far more than any attrition they imposed on the Luftwaffe, who could largely choose whether or not to fight (what did the German's care if the French got bombed or strafted?).
Tuck actually spent most of WW2 as a Prisoner of War, but that does not in anyway appear to have reduced his desire to make himself as awkward as possible to the foe. Tuck had a reputation as a lucky pilot, though in many cases it was often skin-of-his teeth luck, but perhaps his greatest good fortune as a PoW was to miss taking part in the "Great Escape" where 50 Allied PoWs were murdered by the Gestapo/SS
Also, please don't label this book as a novel, novels are fiction, made up stories, this is factual, the biography of a great man.

Without a doubt probably the best book I've ever read dealing with a WW2 fighter pilot ace. I was fortunate to purchase an original hard copy version years back. From the moment I began reading the book I became riveted to it. Being from English & Irish ancestry along with an upbringing in a military family the names Hawker Hurricane & Supermarine Spitfire always brought on a smile of admiration as the true life stories would unfold. Anyone in our family that read this book had nothing but good to say about it. In the manner in which Mr. Forrester & Flying Officer Tuck put you in the pilot seat peering through the gun sight , thumb on the firing button , turn & bank centered & now " Press The Tit " , I could almost feel the recoil as the guns barked while following the path of the tracers into the target. An old pilot friend of mine handed me the pocket-book version of this book stating you got to read this , I read it again enjoying it immensely almost as if it was my first reading all over again. I in turn handed the book off to another old air force pilot with him raving about the book a week later & reading it a second time before he too passed it on. A great true life story & I should add I was in the U.K. actually Wales in the mid-eghties - (?) - when a construction crew unearthed an ME-109 in a bog. The RAF & the German AF were called as the pilot's remains & dog tags were still aboard. The remains were buried in Germany of course , the dog tags through records along with the A/C data plates revealed according to dates & times from both sides that this was an A/C shot down by R.S.Tuck but couldn't be confirmed as it went straight down through thick cloud cover thus Mr.Tuck couldn't confirm the crash as he didn't witness it. After all of those years flew by Flying Officer R.S. Tuck got his confirmation for kill No.30. A great read from start to finish if you're into the Battle of Britain & a great pilot's life of adventure from his early days to his POW days & beyond. DEFINITELY FIVE STARS !

He lives in Napa, California.�Janeen Olsen is a Professor of Marketing at Sonoma State University. Her research on wine consumption, direct to consumer marketing and tasting room service has been published extensively in international business journals, and she lectures on those topics regularly. Janeen lives in Vallejo, California. well researched and highly informative

I read the previous review and quite frankly felt the reviewer must have been talking about a different book.

Let's assume you begin with good wine, but whatever the price point or quality level, this will help any winery understand the finer points of branding, packaging and positioning, and concrete options to get the product into the consumer's hands. The authors, all three of whom appear eminently qualified from their impressive bios, clearly understand the issues behind marketing wine in the U.S. and provide sound advice along with comprehensive resource material and statistical background to support their platforms.

It explores short and long term goal setting within all areas of the process from budgeting to strategic planning for the future. There are no guarantees for success in sales, because even great wine doesn't sell itself, but the information in this book lays a solid foundation and makes for worthwhile reading for any winery.

Winemakers, a must read before you take your wine to market!

Wine Marketing & Sales: Success Strategies for a Saturated Market, 2nd Edition is the textbook I use for my introductory Wine Marketing classes at Walla Walla Community College this winter quarter. This class and book work together as a primer for would-be winemakers and wine grape growers to gain an understanding and appreciation that while they might be focused on making the best wine possible or on growing the best grapes, nothing happens until a consumer decides to purchase that bottle of wine.
It is great to have a resource specifically dedicated to marketing wine. Marketers from other consumer products find out very quickly that their tested strategies and tactics don't necessarily work when marketing a highly-regulated, image-driven product such as wine. Why? The overwhelming reason is that only 21% (Wine Market Council, 2011) of American adults consume wine in any kind of regular frequency. This eliminates traditional lifestyle media for all but the large players, while national wine publications are out of the reach for most small to medium wineries. However, overwhelmingly, there is an aversion of most small to medium wineries to market their crafted product as if they were selling a detergent or an automobile.
Since 2008 though, the industry has changed with the downturn, forcing wineries to focus on the selling (read marketing) their wine rather than waiting for wine visitors to arrive at the tasting room door.
The updated information presented in the 2011 version is important. The new chapter on wine tourism is timely and of increasing importance to those of us living in wine country. I was also pleased to see the mention of Constellation's Project Genome in the revised segmentation chapter. This colossal research project undertook to further differentiate the 20.4% core market to better understand just who those consumers are and their buying habits.
I have two suggestions for future versions. One is a section on the importance of trademarking your brand early in the brand building process. Several winery owners have reinforced that this is the most important step any winery should do to insure that your hard work is not lost due to a trademark ruling.
Secondly, the flood of consumer-driven, popularly-priced wines from large producers is changing our industry. Not only in the type of wines that might appeal to our marginal wine consumers, but also in new strategic relationships between producer and distributor and/or retailer. Charles Shaw wines, now 10 years old, opened up the door for $1.99 wine to be positioned as an everyday beverage. However, this never could have happened without Trader Joe's reputation as a highly-credible brand.
Similarly, [yellow tail] and their strategic partnership with W. J. Deutsch & Sons, are rewriting the book of what wines non-traditional wine consumers might buy. These companies see tremendous upsides in targeting new market segments.
While no one book can capture all the nuances and information necessary to be successful in today's cluttered but hardly saturated wine market place, this well-researched book provides an excellent foundation.

Never underestimate the impact of a pretty face...

In doing research into the impact of wine label design I came across Paul Wagner's excellent book on wine marketing.

The opening of the chapter on Wine Packaging and Labels states: "Never underestimate the impact of a pretty face. The wine label is your wine's face. It has to engage the shopper, be a physical marker of your winery philosophy, and allude to the joys contained within.

And your bottle has to be sexier than the ones it is standing next to."

He goes on to discuss how important that packaging is: "For the average American wine consumer, there is no way to distinguish one bottle from the next - unless we talk about the label."

My only response to Mr. Wagner is: here's to sexy wine messages on wine bottles and a great wine marketing book.

I am pleased to have added it to my wine marketing book shelf along with "99 Bottles of Wine" by David Schuemann and "Wine Marketing Online" by Bruce McGechan.
