Wonderful artwork in companion tome

I remember falling in love with the first "Trumpets" book when I was a kid. I found it on one of my many visits to the local library, and I was even more thrilled to find it on sale (cheap) at a local Kmart at one point. I never found Trumpets in Grumpetland for sale anywhere, but I did also find it at the library. While the story is nothing special, as with the first book, the artwork really shines. The world of the Trumpets and Grumpets is still vivid and detailed.

I waited until I found a reasonable price for this item (around $40) and I was happy to finally acquire it recently to complete the collection. I would not spend the $100+ asked for by some sellers, but that's up to you.

Second book in a series. Great illustrations, cute story, clever puns. Would recommend the purchase of the first book before purchasing this book.

I highly recommend this book

This is a delightful British book by Peter Cross. It is full of intriguing artwork, with pictures within pictures, drawings of items in odd places, yet faithful to the story of adventure between the peace-loving Trumpets and the war-like Grumpets. Exciting events unfold as the story progresses, culminating in a Grumpicat war, with the evil Grumpet leader, Havoc, fighting against the Trumpets. Stimulates a child's imagination in a unique and artful way. I highly recommend this book. All 6 of my children asked for their own copy. (Sadly out of print, so somewhat difficult to find...)

About the Author

SHERIDAN TITMAN

Sheridan Titman holds the McAllister Centennial Chair in Financial Services at the University of Texas. He has a B.S. from the University of Colorado and an M.S. and Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Texas, Professor Titman was a Professor at UCLA, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Boston College and spent the 1988–89 academic year in Washington, D.C., as the special assistant to the Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Economic Policy. In addition, he has consulted for a variety of financial institutions and corporations. He has served on the editorial boards of the leading academic finance and real estate journals, was an editor of the Review of Financial Studies, and was the founding editor of the International Review of Finance. He has served as President of the American Finance Association and the Western Finance Association, and as a director of the American Finance Association, the Asia Pacific Finance Association, the Western Finance Association, and the Financial Management Association and as the President of the Western Finance Association. Professor Titman has published more than 50 articles in both academic and professional journals and a book entitled Financial Markets and Corporate Strategy. He has received a number of awards for his research excellence and is a Fellow of the Financial Management Association and a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Re-search.

JOHN MARTIN

John Martin holds the Carr P. Collins Chair in Finance in the Hankamer School of Business at Baylor University, where he teaches in the Baylor EMBA programs. Over his career, he has published more than 50 articles in the leading finance journals and served in a number of editorial positions, including the coeditorship of the FMA Survey and Synthesis Series for the Oxford University Press. In addition, he has coauthored the following books: Financial Management, 12th edition (Prentice Hall Publishing Company); Foundations of Finance, 8th edition (Prentice Hall Publishing Company); Financial Analysis (McGraw-Hill Publishing Company); The Theory of Finance (Dryden Press); and Value Based Management (Harvard Business School Press/Oxford University Press).

John and Sally have two wonderful sons, the world’s finest daughter-in-law (their youngest son isn’t married), and two beautiful grandsons who visit them often on their ranch outside of Crawford, Texas, where they raise hay and enjoy life with their chickens, dogs (Jack, Minnie, and Pearl) and miniature donkeys (Lottie, Dottie, Wavy, Gravy, and Biscuit).

Great content. Bad, bad Kindle edition DRM.

It's hard to know how many stars to give a book like this. The book is a great textbook, although there are still a lot of errors in the slides if you use this as an instructor. It's much improved over the previous edition. I give it 5 stars for what it is: a good undergraduate-level textbook that I use to supplement a case-based class.

The problem is the DRM associated with this book. This content cannot be viewed in either Kindle for Win8 or in Kindle Cloud Viewer, for no reason I can determine. You also get only two licenses: if you put this on your work computer and your home computer, don't expect to be able to access it from a mobile device as well. Because I've never seen those kind of restrictions before, I was entirely unprepared for them. It was a very unpleasant surprise to set up someplace with my laptop to prepare for my next lecture and find out I wasn't allowed to access the book.

Quick tip: although the error message you'll get when you exceed two downloads says you have to deregister any other devices with the content, you don't - and in fact, if you don't delete the content and re-sync first, deregistering won't help. Delete the content, then sync the device, and that will open another license. Also, if you're on Windows 8, the error message you get just says "you can't use this content in Windows 8," and you'll get a similar message in Cloud Reader. Neither bothers to let you know that there's a third way to view Kindle content on a Win 8 computer: Kindle for PC. Use that and you should be able to read your content.

5 stars for the content. 0 for the restrictive DRM, bad information, and absolutely moronic viewing restrictions. Great work by Sheridan Titman and John Martin, but Amazon and Prentice Hall really outdid themselves trying to screw it up.

He-111 Walk Around - Some Grainy, Dark Photos

The He-111 was the Luftwaffe's premier medium bomber of WW2. Developed in 1935, it was a contemporary of the B-25. The He-111 did not have the range, defensive power or growth potential of the B-25 and suffered accordingly. Approximately 6500 of these aircraft were built. This Walk Around book has photos of restored He-111 from the RAF museum in Hendon and also from Olso, Norway.

76 of the 80 pages are in color - usually that would get a five star rating, but in this case, the photos do lack the quality & crispness that one expects to find from the Walk Around series. I bought the soft cover version and on sale, so my expectations are not so high. Also. There are redeeming qualities of the book.

As examples, the author has a lot of very good information in the captions such as what RLM color was used (German WW2 paint colors) for the interior and exterior. Weapons, bombs, and other equipment are shown as well. 4 pages of color line drawings, black and white line drawings also help the reader in seeing the details of this warbird.

Could the book be better? Sure, but it is good enough for a modeler to detail a plane and a nice supplement to other more detailed histories of the He-111 that do not have any color photographs. I'd recommend this book, it can be found on other websites or used which makes it more attractive.

He 111 "Walkaround"

Well,seems it would not be out of the question or to much to ask ,to have clear and (IN FOCUS) pictures of the subject matter,but that somehow has escaped the publishers and the ten year old who took these photos,most of which are blurry and out of focus of the He-111, and I bought the Hardcover copy,so I guess the jokes on me!

I was there, I saw and talked to the people

I totally disagree with Professor Takaki. I am a Japanese American like he is and I was subjected to racial discrimination just after Pearl Harbor perhaps not as much as he had (if he was born then) because I lived in Hawaii and not sent to internment camp. Nevertheless I felt the sting of discrimination. I was a military member of the military intelligence service assigned to ATIS a division of General MacArthur's G2 or Intelligence Section.

We saw many highly classified documents at the headquarters and involved in numerous translations of enemy documents. We were also sent on temporary duty assignment on special missions to the frontline units and engaged in scouting and capturing enemy soldiers and interrogating them. I had experience at the lowest and the highest level. Therefore, I have my own perspective of why the A bomb was dropped over Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The casualties for both cities exceeded 210,000 people. The strategic bombing of Japan in six months exceeded 300,000 casualties and millions homeless. Invasion planners stated blockade of Japan chokes but does not kill. The bombing destroys cities but not the army. General Eisenhower agreed. General MacArthur was for the invasion and use of the A bomb for tactical purpose. Subsequent data showed he was wrong.

Operation Olympic the invasion of Kyushu was to be launched in November 1945. I was scheduled to be assigned to the 1st Corps to invade Miyasaki, Kyushu by the 6th Army under Gen. Krueger. The XI Corps to land at Ariake Bay to the South and the Marine V Amphibious Corps to land on the southwestern shore. We would have faced 790,000 Japanese versus our 550,000 troops. Operation Coronet was the invasion of Kanto Plain near Tokyo with an invasion force twice as large as Olympic and scheduled for April 1946.

Postwar: I read Ketsugo the Japanese defense plan. The Japanese had not only the kamikaze aircraft, but piloted bombs, piloted torpedoes, suicide speedboats in the thousands, mini suicide submarines and four thousand scuba divers to blow up the troop transports . The beaches were mined, spiderweb network of machine gun nests, hidden artillery behind 50 meter high hills. There were 12700 kamikaze aircraft to be launched from partially hidden runways from underground installations. The Japanese estimated about 50% of our troops to be killed. Our estimate was between 20% and 30% but postwar information revealed it to be much higher. The cave networks were designed from lessons learned in the Pacific war. General Marshall estimated a million Americans would perish. Omaha World Herald in their editorial stated, "These plans that called for the invasion of Japan paint a vivid description of what might have been the most horrible campaigns in the history of man." Prince Fumimaro Konoye said Japan would be a nation without cities. A whole nation and culture would vanish.

The Supreme Council of Japan felt that unconditional meant the elimination of the Emperor. The Emperor also felt that he would be eliminated. President Truman felt less than unconditional would result in future problems if the Japanese armed forces were not eliminated. They may rise again like the Germans. The bomb also saved Japan from being divided into north and south like Korea with Russian participation.

I was one of the first to occupy Japan. I saw caves and caves everywhere and other fortifications. Civilians began to appear two weeks later and I asked what are those caves for? They all said to hide in them and attack us at night. I asked with what? They showed me bamboo spears, bows and arrows, pitchforks, knives, samurai swords, sickles, etc., etc. There were 28 million civilians in a unit called the National Volunteer Combat Force. They were trained in guerilla warfare and attack at night. Women and children ages 15 to 50 were recruited. Everyone I interviewed told me that they will fight for the Emperor and not for the military. They consider him a descendent of God. The history of Japan would show this. This sentiment to save the Emperor was unanimous. Millions of Japanese would have died and that is not counting the suicides expected like in Okinawa. President Truman was concerned with history repeating itself. His decision was based on saving lives both Americans and Japanese and not based on racial prejudice. President Truman and his cabinet although not perfect were honorable men. It is incomprehensible that racial hatred was the basis for dropping the bomb. I was there, I saw and talked to the people. The bomb saved me and my fellow soldiers and millions of Japanese. Takaki is dead wrong including those that said the bomb should not have been dropped. These are people who were not involved and based their conclusions on assumptions and had not read Ketsugo nor saw the fortifications and talked to the people.

The War Could Have Ended Sooner

Like other GIs I was delighted when I heard the news of the atomic bombing of Japan. Within a year or so several articles appeared that described the deaths and sufferings of the innocent Japanese civilians in both Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These articles caused many people to have second thoughts as to the wisdom of the decision. In the 70s I read Gar Alperovitz's book, "Atomic Diplomacy", and was convinced the bombing was a mistake. I was shocked by the Smithsonian controversy--an honest portrayal of both sides of the subject could not be shown. During the periods mentioned I was exposed to writers who discussed various aspects, pro and con, of the bombings.
Although I had previously read quite a bit on the subject, I decided to read "Hiroshima" because I wanted to refresh my knowledge of the bombing, I had read a most favorable review of the author, and the book was small--I could read it in a short time.
It was a good decision. The book packs a tremendous amount of pertinent information within its short length. Besides the decision itself it explores factors that might have influenced that decision. These would include: the desire for revenge of Pearl Harbor; to impress Russia and make her more manageable; the racism that existed in Truman and America and was exacerbated by the war; the masculinity factor of a new president who wished to show he was no wimp.
One gets to see that there was considerable disagreement before and after the bombing as to the wisdom of the decision. The dissenters were not a bunch of revisionist historians but many prominent Americans in the military, government, science and the media. The names include Generals Dwight Eisenhower and Douglas McArthur and Admiral William Leahy-many who would be considered conservatives if they were alive today. We can not return to the past to alter that decision, We can only speculate as to what might have occurred. There is evidence that had the Japanese been offered the peace terms that were eventually given them-maintaining the emperor instead of unconditional surrender-THE WAR COULD HAVE ENDED SOONER THAN IT DID. It was unconscionable not to have at least given the Japanese the option to accept an offer of peace--on the terms we subsequently accepted--before considering using the bomb.

A real eye-opener

Like many people, I managed to exist my formal schooling knowing very little about the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In preparation for an extended trip to Japan, I wanted to learn a little more about this important event.
Ronald Takaki does an excellent job encapsulating the political climate in the U.S., Japan and Russia of 1945. The death of Roosevelt and the elevation of Truman to the presidency had a profound impact on world events. These presidents had different philosophies concerning the use of atomic weapons, and the world might be a very different place had Roosevelt lived to see the end of the war. Truman and Stalin provided a smooth transition from World War II to the beginnings of the Cold War.
Ultimately, I left "Hiroshima : Why America Dropped the Atomic Bomb" with a better understanding and appreciation of why America decided to use atomic weapons against Japan. Takaki provides motivations for most of the key players, along with supporting evidence. The book is extremely readable, and was as captivating as any novel.
Whether or not dropping the bomb was "good" or "bad" is left up to the reader. Honestly, I have yet to decide.

About the Author
Anthony Reyes is a retired Detective with the New York City Police Department’s Computer Crimes Squad. During his assignment with the Computer Crimes Squad, he investigated computer intrusion, fraud, identity theft, child exploitation, and software piracy. Detective Reyes previously sat as an alternate member of New York Governor George E. Pataki's Cyber-Security Task Force. Mr. Reyes is a member of the New York State Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce. He is also a member of the National Institute of Justice Electronic Crime Partnership Initiative (ECPI). Additionally, he is a member of the High Technology Crime Investigation Association (HTCIA), and served as the President in 2005 of the Association’s Northeast Chapter.

Kevin O’Shea is a Homeland Security and Intelligence Specialist for the Technical Analysis Group in the Justiceworks program at the University of New Hampshire. Kevin assisted in the development of the NH Strategic Plan to Combat Cyber Crime and currently supports the implementation of the Strategic Plan. Kevin has authored and coauthored a number of high-tech training programs for the law enforcement community and has assisted in the development of a new digital forensics paradigm in use in N.H.

Prior to working at the University of New Hampshire, he was a Research Associate for Project Management within the Technical Analysis Group in the Institute for Security Technology Studies at Dartmouth College. He was a member of the research team and substantive author of three critical national reports to document and present the most pressing impediments facing the law-enforcement community when investigating and responding to cyber attacks: Law Enforcement Tools and Technologies for Investigating Cyber Attacks: A National Needs Assessment, Gap Analysis, and the Research and Development Agenda.

James “Jim” Steele (CISSP, MCSE: Security, Security+) has a career rich with experience in the security, computer forensics, network development, and management fields. For over 15 years he has played integral roles regarding project management, systems administration, network administration, and enterprise security management in public safety and mission-critical systems. As a Senior Technical Consultant assigned to the NYPD E-911 Center, he designed and managed implementation of multiple systems for enterprise security; he also performed supporting operations on-site during September 11, 2001, and the blackout of 2003. Jim has also participated in foreign projects such as the development of the London Metropolitan Police C3i Project, for which he was a member of the Design and Proposal Team. Jim’s career as a Technical Consultant also includes time with the University of Pennsylvania and the FDNY. His time working in the diverse network security field and expert knowledge of operating systems and network products and technologies has prepared him for his current position as Manager of Digital Forensics with a large wireless carrier. His responsibilities include performing workstation, server, PDA, cell phone, and network forensics as well as acting as a liaison to multiple law enforcement agencies, including the United States Secret Service and the FBI. On a daily basis he investigates cases of fraud, employee integrity, and compromised systems. Jim is a member of HTCC, NYECTF, InfraGard, CTIN and the HTCIA.

The acquired credentials such as CISSP, Security+, Microsoft, and etc can easily be obtained through cheating legal system established by third party organization. It is nearly impossible to pass the certifications without paying $5000 course + pretest. The pretest of the class is the same as the real test -- verbatim. Cheating means you have prior knowledge of the test you're taking. Don't believe someone says that they're certified because 90% of the time, it was acquired through legal system of cheating.

Tim Hurson starts by explaining how we all build inner barriers to effective thinking. He identifies the thinking habits that severely limit our behavior, from "monkey mind" to "gator brain". Then he demonstrates how to overcome these barriers.

More than anything, productive thinking is an attitude that will let you look at problems and convert them into opportunities. At the end of this disciplined brainstorming process, you'll have a concrete action plan, complete with timelines and deadlines.

I recommend this book to my colleagues and customers

I received a new book to review called Think Better. The subtitle is "An innovator's guide to productive thinking" and the book was written by Tim Hurson from Thinkx.

There are a LOT of new books on innovative thinking, or just innovation in general, so I was a little leery of another book, but I found this one to be very insightful and useful. There's a lot to like, and a lot to use, in this book, whether you happen to hail from the consulting and services oriented side of innovation, or are just starting out and want your internal corporate team to become more productive innovative thinkers.

I'll admit to being a bit jaded, and the first few sections of the book offer more of a history lesson about innovation and innovative thinking than I felt necessary, but for those approaching the topic for the first time, the concepts of the monkey mind and gator brain are compelling, since they demonstrate that our current methods of thinking avoid risk and most often simply react to threats or patterns. The book starts to get really interesting in the fourth chapter, which deals with resisting the urge to quickly arrive at an answer. Instead, the book encourages us to "Stay with the Question". In his approach, Hurson sucks us in, peeling the onion a little at a time and getting agreement, till we are in violent agreement that we must change drastically. Then he rolls out section three of his book, which outlines a process for creative and innovative thinking, supported by a number of simple but powerful tools.

The phases describe a method to generate better ideas, use some divergent then convergent thinking to stretch them, then move on to evaluate and determine which ideas should be considered for evaluation. What I also like is that he adds a step for deciding actions and assigning resources. Too often we get excited about selecting ideas for further investigation without determining and identifying the resources and plans necessary for the critical next steps. Along this process he introduces a number of tools: the I-cube or the C-5 or the DRIVE model, all of which are relatively easy to use and bring shape and focus around thinking and decision making that traditionally has been very subjective.

I like this book because it aligns to what seems right to me - a useful process that anyone can follow to obtain better thinking and better ideas. From our experience in larger organizations, a defined set of steps or phases is necessary to help people understand what has happened, what should happen now and what should happen next. I think the next thing Tim and his team will need to do is decide how to "scale" this capability so that the thinking permeates an organization and the approach becomes a common one across organizations rather than simply in enlightened pockets. Of course, that's something near and dear to my heart.

Creative productive thinking is a great first step. However, creativity without action is interesting but ultimately a sideshow. Tim defines a method to help people think more creatively, but also outlines a set of steps and tools to move an idea through a consistent process to an ultimate conclusion. That's moving from creativity to innovation, and eventually from ideas to new products, services or business models.

Think Better - a major new work on creatively confronting challenges

Tim Hurson's "Think Better" is not a treatise for armchair philosophers but an action-packed thriller, an exciting travel guide from theory to practice.

Productive thinking, Hurson argues, generates new things, as opposed to reproductive thinking, which refines what is known. It is the deliberate search for breakthrough rather than incremental change and it is powered by the alternation of creative and critical thinking.

The book presents a model which includes a rigorous method and superb practical tools and techniques that have been designed, developed and successfully tested in real life by the author. In the process, thinkers are urged to balance facts and feelings, information and imagination, aspirations and action and persevere through the "third third" of the brainstorm - that final stretch where the really great ideas emerge.

The clear writing style and the well-organized content are enhanced by quality story-telling that gives the book soul, with true stories (hospitals, insurance companies, furniture, space travel) as well as imaginary ones (how an airline might make its middle seats attractive).

Tim Hurson has clearly done a lot of productive thinking about productive thinking in this contemporary and comprehensive work, which constitutes a major contribution to the literature of creatively confronting challenges.

Thorough Presesentation of Working Tools for Creative Problem Solving

THINK BETTER by Tim Hurson is a thorough presentation of highly useful working tools for creative idea generation to creative problem solving.

Though I have been teaching the Osborn-Parnes Creative Problem Solving Process Model since 1978 I learned many things through the complete presentation that Tim makes in THINK BETTER.

In the book he provides his interpretation of the OP CPS Process and adds several excellent tools to make the OP CPS Process more effective in either workplace or personal problems.

This is an excellent book for people who are trying to learn much about how to use a complete process fro examining challenges, generating ideas, narrowing down those ideas into potential solutions and developing workable plans and to go through a planning process in order to increase the potential results.
