Stover (The Bombshell Manual of Style) wrote her playful anthropology of Bohemian culture from an insider’s viewpoint. The daughter of Bohemians, at one time a fully practicing Bohemian, and a now a Bohemian "with some bourgeois pretense," she is clearly steeped in the lifestyle. In this book, she documents the most important attributes of the five variations of Bohemians (Nouveau, Gypsy, Beat, Zen and Dandy) and of Bohemian philosophy generally, beginning with a "diagnosis" that serves mostly to emphasize how varied Bohemians are and how fiercely they resist any kind of classification. Stover is fully aware of the futile nature of her quest to pin down such elusive characters, and her writing is accordingly ironic, full of asides and amusing pseudo-scholarly footnotes. The book’s four main parts describe Bohemians in all their counterculture splendor, with short sections on everything from typical Bohemian names ("they name their offspring with the same whimsical sensibility with which they name their pets"), clothes, typical relationships, choice of reading material and music, and eating habits (featuring "The Twenty-Four-Hour Menu of the Starving Bohemian"). In fictionalized profiles of nine Bohemians from around the world, including Dantini the septuagenarian magician and Atlas the Dutch artist, Stover brings these unusual figures to life in a wonderfully familiar way. True Bohemians certainly won’t need this book to decide whether they’re Bohemian, but may enjoy these humorous takes on their subculture, and non-Bohemians will find it a delightful introduction to that unique existence.

About the Author
Laren Stover is the author of The Bombshell Manual of Style, and a novel, Pluto, Animal Lover, a finalist for The Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers award. She has been a resident of Yaddo and Hawthornden Castle and received the Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation grant for fiction in 1991. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, Bomb, and The New York Observer. She lives in New York.

Romance in a difficult time

The Clash Between the Minds is the story of former Union officer Sarah-Bren Coulter, her partner Faith Pruitt and Faith's son Benjamin. The book is set in the period after the Civil War when the United States was trying to put itself back together, but the process didn't occur easily. Many people still clung to bitter feelings from the war and did not want to accept the new reality of freed slaves living among them. In this version life in a Missouri town is difficult for both women. Faith is serving as the town's teacher while Sarah is trying to keep their farm going. Their relationship is viewed by the local people as odd, at best, and definitely undesirable. They find their family caught up in the growing violence brought on by the appearance of the Ku Klux Klan and a rising tide of hatred caused by people who will not accept anyone who is different from their definitions of "normal" and "desirable." Forces conspire to tear them apart and, in an effort to save the woman and son she loves, Faith may have to agree to their demands. Faith is confused; Sarah goes on a quest to find somewhere that they can be safe; and whether or not they will be able to save their relationship hangs very much in doubt.

The Reconstruction period following the US Civil War was one of the most difficult in the country's history. It would seem an odd period in which to set a romance, but it provides a perfect environment to show how a relationship can be tested. It also gives Nann Dunne a setting to explore important questions like racism, bigotry and terrorism. This is a story about two women who face challenges to their love, but it's also a bigger story as a country struggles to overcome hatred that is openly and vigorously expressed. As the tale of Sarah and Faith is interwoven with the realistic recreation of events that occurred then, it becomes clear that there is more at risk than them. The soul of a nation is also being tested.

Dunne has created strong, but flawed main characters; flawed in a way that makes them susceptible to doubt. She surrounds them with noble and brutal secondary characters that bring out the best and the worst in both women. This is an interesting and enjoyable book, but it goes beyond that because it's also educational and thought provoking. This is a story that can be enjoyed on two levels, first as a powerful romance and then as a commentary on a difficult era. This is definitely a book worth reading.

After reading book one of the series by Nann Dunn, I went right into the second book, The Clash Between The Minds ( Book Two
In the Hearts, Minds, Soul Series ) happy to say I was lost for about three hours, I had to Try and put it down to get things done. I LOVED the history in the first and second books. I wish more love stories were included along with history. Women played such important roles in the history of our country! I fell in love with Faith and Sara. Leah, Benjamin and other wonderful characters in this series, I cannot wait for book three! PLEASE HURRY WITH IT!

About the Author

Michael Rosenblum is a Software Architect/Senior DBA at Dulcian, Inc., where he is responsible for system tuning and application architecture. Michael supports Dulcian developers by writing complex PL/SQL routines and researching new features. He is an Oracle ACE, a frequent presenter at various Oracle user group conferences (Oracle OpenWorld, ODTUG, IOUG Collaborate, RMOUG, NYOUG), and winner of the ODTUG Kaleidoscope 2009 Best Speaker Award. In his native Ukraine, Michael received the scholarship of the president of Ukraine, a master of science degree in information systems, and a diploma with honors from the Kiev National University of Economics.

Dr. Paul Dorsey is the founder and president of Dulcian, Inc., an Oracle consulting firm specializing in business rules and web-based application development. He is the chief architect of Dulcian's Business Rules Information Manager (BRIM�) tool. Dr. Dorsey is the co-author of seven Oracle Press books on Designer, Database Design, Developer, and JDeveloper, which have been translated into nine languages. He is an Oracle Fusion Middleware Regional Director. Paul is President Emeritus of NYOUG and the Associate Editor of the International Oracle User Group's SELECT Journal. Excellent resource for developers and DBAs

Misha and Dr. Dorsey follow a very effective pattern in this manual: Each topic is introduced and all of the options are laid out, then they illustrate the performance impacts of those varfious options. They share the code for each example so that we can use to prove the performance differences for ourselves to our peers.

The discussion and analysis is not a simple 'do it this way or your performance will really suck' but is generously supported by their own experiences. You couldn't ask for two more experienced authors.

The book covers provides historical perspectives on a number of their approaches. For instance, limitations in earlier releases affect many of our assumptions about performance tuning. They point out where the old practices/prejudices came from and roll it forward to the functionality available in today's 11g and 12c releases.

DBAs will benefit from the insights here, particularly when doing performing tuning. Astute developers will find the variety of examples and the strength of their arguments very helpful in writing their own code and affecting the work of their peers.

Finally, the friendly tone of the text (likely due to Arup Nanda's editing) makes it pleasant to read and easy to digest even of you don't use PL/SQL a lot.

Misha and Paul take the scientific route to performance, providing readers the how-and-why of effective performance. The first chapter sets the tone showing how performance is an aggregate typically of nine-steps from execution of code on the client side, through middleware, to server, and back again to the client. Learn how PL/SQL works from two of the best whose shared stories of actual issues underline the importance of performance planning and thinking.
Oracle database professionals rely upon PL/SQL to accomplish many important tasks. This book presents numerous opportunities to improve PL/SQL performance offering more than just code suggestions.
