I prefer my anarchism without choas

Readers can easily expect that an anthology of poetry about anarchism might be difficult to assemble given that few identify themselves as anarchists or write about anarchist themes. Yet somehow Visions of Poesy: An Anthology of 20th Century Anarchist Poetry manages to cobble together 267 pages of versification.

I say "versification" because many of the entries do not qualify as "poetry" by any reasonable definition of the term except for their end-stopped lines. The tragedy is the anthology's evident lack of poetic values unintentionally reinforces the erroneous notion that anarchism promotes chaos. Quite the opposite in fact. Anarchism promotes the order that results from mutual and fully-informed consent. It opposes imposed order.

Apparently, in their zeal to create the impression that anarchy generates considerable poetic activity, the editors have left the impression that anarchism hasn't produced much poetry that is worthwhile. A much shorter work retaining the few gems this anthology contains would have benefited this work and anarchism better.

I have taught biochemistry to medical students and to undergraduates and graduate students, at both Temple University School of Medicine and at Case Western Reserve University, since 1968, so that I have had a great deal of experience in the field and have a feel for what works well for medical students.
Medical Biochemistry at a Glance would be an excellent book for USMLE Step 1. In my experience, medical students (and pre-medical students) would greatly benefit from reading it in preparation for the exam.
This compares very well with Lippincott’s Biochemistry - this has the right price and approach to compete with Lippincott for a less expensive and more accessible alternative to the larger text books that are out there.
I like the way it combines the metabolic pathways and principles in such a creative fashion, and the metabolism sections are among the best I have read and the easiest to understand. Metabolism is a very complicated subject and, in my experience, most teachers of the subject would really benefit from your text. (Richard W. Fantastic Book

This is a great book for any medical professional, whether doctor, researcher, med student or nutritionist. It captures the major metabolic pathways in an easy to read format, with just the right mix of text and diagrams. The author's larger volume entitled Biochemistry at a Glance has even more in-depth information on the pathways, but fewer clinically relevant tidbits. I own and use both books. In fact, they are part of my go-to library of must-have reference books, spending more time out on the desk than sitting on the shelf.

I don't know if these come in an electronic format, but I bought the paper editions. With lots of graphics, ink colors and oversized pages, I think this would translate poorly into an eBook.

Great little Supplement for visual learning of Medical Biochemistry

This book saved me in the first year of medical school. I had a very poorly organized biochemistry textbook, with lectures that were not any better. I am a visual learner and needed large, detailed pictures that give an idea of the 'big picture.' That is where this small text excelled. Most of the major, basic pathways needed in medical biochemistry are covered--from TCA cycle to purine, pyrimidine, fat, and amino acid metabolism. I was not a science major in college so I needed major reviews on biochemistry.

Each 'system' is usually depicted on 2 adjacent pages, with many annotations, and usually a short, concise clinical note; but overall the majority of the page is taken up by the diagrams.

If you like systems diagrams to learn with, and need some good, visual, 'big picture' biochemistry study aids, I highly recommend this text.

Excellent - in the same league as Salway's Metabolism at a Glance!

Way back in 1998 I came across Salway's Metabolism at a Glance, and ranked it as Excellent, Concise and Thorough! I would give the same designation to this book as well. Snippets of information are provided in each chapter, and under each diagram, that succinctly provide crucial information on each specific pathway - information that would be quite useful to a medical student or to a bio-medical researcher studying mammalian or human metabolism.

With this new edition, we have endeavored to retain the positive features of earlier editions while incorporating new information within the profession. In writing the seventh edition of this text, we have been committed to changes that reflect the realities of education at the turn of the century. Thus the text includes increased attention to many contemporary themes in education, including inclusion, collaboration, cooperative teaching, strategy training, the importance of phonological awareness, holistic perspectives, home-school collaboration, ethical issues in the education profession, transition, and positive educational outcomes.

The title, Strategies for Teaching Learners with Special Needs, reflects the generic focus consistent with the previous editions of the text. This scope reflects our belief that appropriate teaching methods are rarely category-specific but instead represent good teaching strategies that benefit many learners. As the title of the book acknowledges, methods that are effective for students with various disabilities as well as those at risk are best selected from the broad domain of effective instructional practices and then matched to individual needs.

While this text is designed for the realities of programs for learners with diverse exceptional needs, we are also committed to the belief that all learners with disabilities need a comprehensive curriculum. Therefore, the discussion of curricular design, the clarifications within content chapters, and the further attention to transitional and career concerns emphasize that differences among subgroups of students with special needs must be reflected in differentiated programming.

Could use older edition

This 8th edition could easily be replaced with the 7th edition for a lot less money. The chapters contain basically the same information AND the 7th edition comes with a cd with strategies and the 8th edition does not have any extras. This is a paperback book and for the money, you would be better off saving it and getting the 7th edition.

Wonderful Beginners Rhyming Dictionary

With over 15,000 words, it has enough for an aspiring poet to be very useful without overwhelming a reader. Although more advanced poets should turn to Sue K. Young's other rhyming dictionary, The New Comprehensive American Rhyming Dictionary, it is perfect in a classroom. I originally bought this book from my 7th grade literature teacher and immediately found good use. For the past five years, it has been of great convenience and has been one of the books I keep at the side of my desk.
When writing a poem for school assignments or merely to express my own emotional state, or convey a story, it has definitely come in handy. Although I am currently looking for a new, more comprehensive rhyming dictionary, this book is great for beginners.

A more useful reference book than you'd imagine...

Wow! I was really surprised with the quality of this book - It is a very well organized book of rhyming words, which is a handy thing to have around! The rhyming words are listed alphabetically by number of syllables. I bought 3 of these for friends of mine who are going into University journalism courses, and they were thrilled. These things aren't just for "ages eight and up" as it states on the back; everyone can have fun with a rhyming dictionary!

It's also really fun to just read the rhyming words out loud quickly in front of a group of people. It's an excellent "coffee-table book" in that sense! More fun than a barrel of monkeys!

Although it can easily be read as a standalone

A Merry Mistletoe Wedding is a continuation to a novel It Must Have Been a Mistletoe.
Although it can easily be read as a standalone, I do suggest, if you plan to read it's prequel, to do it before you grab this one.
The reason: you will be spoiled for the most things that happened in the previous book.
But, if you're just in a mood to read something quick and entertaining, or you don't mind spoilers, then go ahed and read it.

The story is written in the third person and it follows three women: Thea, who's getting married, her sister Emily, who gave birth recently and is dealing with postnatal depression, and Anna, who is selling her old house with the aim to buy a new one.

From all of the three stories, I have to say that the one that kept me interested the most was Emily's.
Since I didn't read the first book, I didn't know what actually happened to her in Cornwall and, because of that, I had a difficult time to understand her behaviour.
As the story progressed, I recognized her depression and anxiety.
At first I was looking at her as the one who's acting rude, but later, I saw how people around her misunderstood her.

Thea (I love that name!) had some interesting things going on in her life. After all, she was getting married. I couldn't help but wonder how come her preparation for it wasn't as stressful as it is in real life (at least that's the impression I got from those few weddings I was a part of in a preparation process), but the ex-boyfriend drama and unfamiliar girl in her fiance's flat were enough on her plate.
I have a feeling her story is much more interesting in the first book.

Anna 's story was the least interesting to me but was still enjoyable.

If you're looking for a warm Christmas read I have to warn you: this is not that kind of a book.
The most christmassy thing about this book is it's title and the cover.
The plot follows the time period from summer to Christmas, when the wedding is happening.
There are a few scenes with Santa and, of course, mistletoe.

I really, really liked scenes in Cornwall. I am not even sure what was so good about them, but I am sure they made me want to visit that place.

What I didn't like about this book is how Emily solve her problem just like that. I don't think it works that way in reality.
I wish that aspect of the story was developed more realisticly.

Would I recommend this book?
Definitely!
Will I read It Must Have Been a Mistletoe even though I know most things that happened in it?
You know what? I think I will. I definitely will!

Thea and Sean want to get married and they want to do it on Christmas Day. They want a small and cozy wedding. There will be a few guests and it's supposed to become a fun and relaxing day. Unfortunately not everything is going according to plan. It isn't easy to talk things through when you live miles apart and some unexpected surprises from the past are making things difficult. Thea's sister is also causing trouble. Will Thea have a happy wedding after all or has she made another mistake in love?

A Merry Mistletoe Wedding isn't as funny as It Must Have Been the Mistletoe, but it is a wonderful sweet story. Because it's mostly about the months before the wedding it can easily be read at any time of year. I enjoyed this story a lot, especially the ending which is very romantic. It was nice to read another story about Thea and her family. I loved finding out more about all the different characters. I think Judy Astley has written a really lovely sequel.

What I like about Judy Astley's writing is that it flows easily. She has a great sense of humor and she knows how to make her characters come to life. I enjoy reading about big family Christmases and love an amusing feel good story. I could read happy holiday stories all the time. I highly recommend this wonderful book. This entertaining Christmas story is great for cheering up and it's perfect for any fan of merry Christmas reads.

Lovely, funny, romantic book!

What a lovely book! Judy deals with some very sensitive issues - previous relationships, both recent and distant, family rows and post natal depression in a very sensitive way. It is a very "busy" book - featuring all the members of a family and their problems and solutions.

I really liked the way Judy accelerated the time as we approached Christmas and the seeming oblivion of Thea and her approaching wedding. Thea and Sean have a lovely relationship, full of of teasing and laughs.

Emily and Sam have children and the story concentrates on Emily after the birth of her 3rd child. Sam performs a masterstroke near the end of the book and my heart bled for poor Emily!

Anna and Mike (mum and dad) are ageing hippies and Anna's sensitive handling of Mike's total denial of getting older was very well done!

My favourite character was Rosie - her lack or tact was incredible - and consequently extremely funny! I loved the way everyone tolerated and understood that she didn't mean any harm by her extraordinary comments!

All in all, a lovely Christmas read and the locations are beautifully described - both Cornwall and SW London - areas Judy knows well as she lives in both!

Ground-breaking, but outdated

Duby's work was ground-breaking in the 1960s, but has now become outdated. That is not to say that his arguments and analyses have proven wrong or been supersceded. It is outdated simply because it has been incorporated into much more detailed and comprehensive accounts written in the last thirty years (particularly by Norman Pounds).
That does not mean that this book is not worth reading. Duby's piece still provides a unique perspective. Although the work as a whole has been incorporated into much bigger books, no one has focused on the same characteristics that he has. Duby writes wonderfully on the gift and plunder economy, the importance of the medieval world-view to economic growth, and the change in technology. Duby's work is most valuable, however, for the image it creates. Duby follows in the French tradition of writing "impressionist histories." In this way Duby gives an excellent idea of what it was like to live in the early medieval period. In many ways The Early Growth of the European Economy is the perfect companion to Marc Bloch's Feudal Society.
This book is still worth reading because of the focus it has and the impression it gives. At under three hundred pages, it is a quick read, and provides an excellent introduction to the topic.
