About the Author
Larry J. Siegel was born in the Bronx in 1947. While living on Jerome Avenue and attending City College of New York (CCNY) in the 1960s, he was swept up in the social and political currents of the time. He became intrigued with the influence contemporary culture had on individual behavior: Did people shape society, or did society shape people? He applied his interest in social forces and human behavior to the study of crime and justice. After graduating from CCNY, he attended the newly opened program in criminal justice at the State University of New York at Albany, earning both his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees there. After completing his graduate work, Dr. Siegel began his teaching career at Northeastern University and has also held teaching positions at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire, and in the School of Criminology and Justice Studies at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell (UML). Now a Professor Emeritus, he continues to teach courses on criminology and criminal justice in UML'S online master's degree program. Dr. Siegel has written extensively in the area of crime and justice, including books on juvenile law, delinquency, criminology, corrections, criminal justice, and criminal procedure. He is a court-certified expert on police conduct and has testified in numerous legal cases.

John L. Worrall is Professor of Criminology at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). A Seattle native, he received a B.A., double majoring in psychology and law and justice, from Central Washington University in 1994. Both his M.A. (criminal justice) and Ph.D. (political science) were received from Washington State University, where he graduated in 1999. From 1999-2006, he was a member of the criminal justice faculty at California State University, San Bernardino. He joined UTD in Fall 2006, was promoted to full professor in 2008, and in 2010 was selected to direct the criminology program, a position he held until 2015. He now directs UTD's executive M.S. program in Justice Administration and Leadership. Dr. Worrall has published articles and book chapters on a variety of topics ranging from legal issues in policing to crime measurement, having recently been ranked one of the most prolific sole and lead authors in the discipline. Courses he regularly teaches (and has authored texts for) include introductory criminal justice, criminal procedure, and crime control policy. Dr. Worrall is active in the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, the American Society of Criminology, and a number of regional associations. He regularly works with local criminal justice agencies on evaluation projects and continues to serve as editor of the journal Police Quarterly.

An ad for his Lightning Process--based on insecurity?

Full disclosure: I've only read 75% of this book and am probably not going to finish it. It's poorly written, poorly planned, and based in insecurity.

Parker spends pages and chapters haranguing you about how you have to believe that there's a mind/body connection. (OK, OK, I do.)

He includes zillions of testimonials but they all scrupulously omit any description of his process.

He includes a whole aggrieved chapter trying to refute the bad things people have said about him on the Internet. (Phil, honey, just a hint: If no one is saying bad things about you on the Internet, it's probably because no one is talking about you there at all.)

My main difficulty, though, is that the book is pretty much an ad for his course, yet he says almost nothing concrete about it. Unfortunately, given that it's expensive and requires traveling somewhere, and that his customer base is largely people who have CFS/ME who can neither get around well nor earn a living any more, this seems mean-spirited at best and devious at worst. He seems to believe that any wheelchair-bound person can leave their children behind, dig up an attendant to travel with them at any time, and drop quite a bit of money, simply on his repeated assertions that it will all be OK as long as they believe. (Come on, Tinkerbelle!)

It's too bad because I can agree with the one thing he does say, that CFS may involve a bad feedback loop which produces constant physical-emergency responses in the body. But a good premise doesn't automatically translate into a good treatment.

I have no doubt (with insecurity positively reeking from the pages) that part of Parker's fears involve others stealing his methods. But he needs to recognize that more fully describing his methods is merely showing basic respect to those with limited resources of cash and energy. Other practitioners of various types describe their methods fully and still fill seminars, since written material and personal guidance really aren't the same.

Perhaps Mr. Parker needs to take his own process (which he claims also helps OCD, perfectionism, and fear of failure--surely it could help insecurity?) and then rewrite this book. As it is, my disappointment with its skimpiness ends up suggesting I'll also be disappointed with a skimpy course.

suspiciously claims to be a panacea for many condition-my snake oil detector is buzzing.
the lightning process has not been formally and thoroughly studied.
the lightning process buzz-or whatever buzz their is, is heavily dependant on testimonials, and testimonials themselves, do not constitute evidence of efficacy. i believe we should support real research into the medical aspects of ME. in my opinion the lightning process is what scientists call, woo-woo-

While admiring their individual talent, Fleischer is appalled by their sometimes infantile behavior. In a series of often hilarious anecdotes, he describes John Wayne's petty side, Kirk Douglas's ludicrous demands for attention, Robert Mitchum's methodical trashing of a set during a tantrum and Darryl Zanuck's very public infatuation with the French singer Juliette Greco. Merry Memoirs by Hollywood director Fleischer, helmsman of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, The Boston Strangler, Fantastic Voyage, Doctor Doolittle, Mandingo, Compulsion, and 43 other films. Lighthearted takes on tough moments fill the standout pages of Fleischer's 77 years in the flicks. He was born (in 1916) to the movies, his father being the celebrated animator Max Fleischer, who gave film life to Betty Boop, Popeye, and many other memorable screen characters. Dad's great black beast in the industry was Walt Disney, who later offered the author the job of directing Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea--which Fleischer could accept only with his father's blessing. Among the many wonderful moments rendered here are the wrestling with the mechanical problems of Jules Verne's giant squid--as well as with Orson Welles in the full tide of his ego (he later apologized to Fleischer for his blowups). Quite moving is the death of Edward G. Robinson, who, at 80, filmed the last frames of his career--his marvelous death scene in Soylent Green--under the author's direction. Fleischer limns the immense ego of 20th Century-Fox studio head Darryl F. Zanuck, for whom he worked many times, who's shown with slimy cigar and brown-stained teeth, marching about giving orders. Kirk Douglas, star of the Verne vehicle, as well as of one of Fleischer's best films, The Vikings, also gets rapped (and forgiven) for rampant egoism, while Howard Hughes--then head of RKO--remains an idiotic perfectionist and yet has an adventurer's winning glow. John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, Rex Harrison, and Charlton Heston all have their moments center stage as well. Women--never great power-wielders in Fleischer's heyday--get little play here. Richard Fleischer was probably a director who rarely made a good film. Now I am not saying that he was a bad director but he either made a great film or a mediocre one, almost never anything in-between. However, in my opinion, one of his rare "good" films was the Robert Mitchum/Jane Russell vehicle His Kind of Woman. A middling fair overall but enjoyable but not nearly as enjoyable as reading the frustration Fleischer had to endure from Howard Hughes from this wonderful memoir "Just Tell Me When to Cry". What was simply suppose to be punching-up of the finale ended up being re-shoot of the film which took a year. These were just one of the many trials Fleischer had to go through during his long career and there are a long range of names here from the golden age of cinema; John Wayne, Kirk Douglas, Eddie G. Robinson, Orson Welles, and even legendary director Akira Kurosawa. Fleischer retells his conflicts he had with the actors he worked with a great deal of respect, he simply tells it like it is but usually ended the recollections on a good note; I think the only one he had nothing good to say about was Charles Bronson. Not everything is dirt though, the most touching chapter by far was the recollection of directing a frail and dying Edward G. Robinson in his final film, Soylent Green. If you don't get a little choked up after reading that story, you must be a robot. Overall, this quite a read for anyone who either has seen Fleischer's films or a major film buffs.

GET OUT THE LYSOL, FOLKS! THIS ONE REALLY STINKS!

This book stinks. It really does. In addition to being completely implausible, it is an insult to one's intelligence. In an nutshell, the protagonist has a son in college and a daughter in high school. The son allegedly commits suicide and she flies to upstate N.Y. to get the scoop on why. Her boorish Neanderthal of a husband refuses to invest any feelings toward the deceased son nor will the rat fly with her. Once airborne, Sarah meets Detective Aldo Diamond (just happens to be sitting near a sleuth) who agrees to help her crack the case. To really add stupidity into the mix, there is a quasi-gothic character (or should one say "characters") who pose as triplet brothers who work at the college. Bottom line is, it's one demented man behind the triplet charade. After some inept sleuthing and implausible scenes, Sarah learns that there is a high suicide rate at the college due to the school's shadowy history.
Don't waste your time, folks. This book is really a bust with nothing to recommend it. You'd do better watching television instead.

This is the story of a mother who lost a child and her trip to unravel why he died. The lead character was never filled out enough to elicit any real emotion from the reader. She was not consistent with the very brief character description in the beginning of the book. This lady was an assistant DA, yet once her son committed suicide she never used any of the characteristics that a GOOD DA would have. She was a basket case most of the way through. Logic was a word she didn't understand. By the end of the book I really didn't care what happened to her.
The only sympathetic character in the book was Diamond, an obese man who was eating himself to death over guilt about the death of his family. He tried to help Sarah and save her from harm. At the end I was very happy that he "was not hungry" and you knew he was going to get his life back together.
Unless you have nothing to do or are really bored and want something to add to that boredom don't read this one.

Don't waste your time!

After reading one book by Judith Kelman, I thought I would give her a second chance and try another. I didn't possibly think that another could be as bad as the first. I was wrong. Where Shadows Fall is an insult to suspenseful romantic mystery readers everywhere. To start, the relationship between the two major characters in the book is developed hastily and unbelievably. The murder or suicide plot is weak at best and everything surrounding it is just words on a page. Laboring through this leads to a ridiculous ending that arrived 338 pages too late.
