This book presents a survey of the academic subdivisions of the science of ecology. Gives some general information and then a chapter on each of 6 different specializations in the science, viz., landscape, ecosystem, physiological, behavioral, population and community ecology, written by pofessional ecologists. Especially valuable for someone wishing to study ecology in school who wonders what exactly the various subfields deal with and consist of. Also enjoyable for anyone wanting to learn about the aims, problems, approaches and results of ecology as an academic endeavor. Includes sections on how the subfields are linked together. Includes a glossary and many references.

I really like the way they organize this book. For me, a environmental management study person, this book gives a very clear sketch of Ecology. It also very good to read articles from so many good ecologist from diferent angles. I strongly recommand this book to those who want to know what have been discussed and covered in the subject of Ecology, and how we can link these ideas and knowledge to our life or other studies.

What a terrible book - not only is it difficult to read - but missing much of common Ecology viewpoints and basics. Worthless, absolutely worthless - anyone want to by mine - cost of postage. If not, I'll just burn it.

Comprehensive, Unique, and Dry

This is the first first book I have come across that really delves into the political and economic aspects of military history while not losing a beat in discussing the tactics. Howard does a great job of leading one subject into another, but if you do not have some background in European History, this is not the book to start with. Howard's thematic tool is combatants, such as "War of the Knights," "War of the Mercenaries," etc. While this is effective in converying how one group becomes more important than the previous, he does not really give you a full flavor for why it is changing, concentrating more on weaponry and politics. Overall: read it if you haven't, but make sure you have some background in European history first.

Essential Reading

A friend of mine recommended this book to me. At the time it was required reading at West Point and it very well may still be. No other book displays the history of war in Europe in such a concise and complete way. It also shows how the nations of Europe developed and what gave them thier defining characteristics. Anyone with an interest in Western history or military history should own a copy of this book.

An Introduction to the Wars of Europe...

In "War in European History", distinguished British military historian Michael Howard provides a concise and fascinating survey of European conflict from roughly the Fall of Rome to the end of the Second World War. This book was first published in 1976 and has been provided with a new afterword for the 2009 edition.

In brisk, well-written chapters, Howard explores the contributions to European warfare of the Knights, the Mercenaries, the Merchants, the Professionals, the Revolution, the Nations, and the Technologists. Along the way, he examines the ways in which political movements, growing economic wealth, more effective governments, and more lethal technology interacted to change the nature of European wars.

In a sense, Howard's book has two endings. In the first, the devastation of the world wars and the rise of the Soviet Union and United States by 1945 seemingly ended the role of Europe as the military and political center of the global system. After 1945, the lethality of nuclear weapons seemed to make another major European war all but unthinkable. However, in his updated epilogue, Howard acknowledges that conflict within the global system, of which Europe is a part, will almost inevitably require European participation in future wars.

At a brief 144 pages, "War in European History" can be no more than a survey, even if brillantly written. Details have inevitably been slighted in favor of larger trends. Howard is admittedly a specialist in European military history; others may reasonably disagree with, for example, his estimate of the adaptibility of the American military. However, as an introduction to a major theme of military history, "War in European History" is hard to beat and very highly recommended.

Excellent book by a known author on knowledge management in organizations. Details how organizations rely on, utilize, nurture, or destroy and lose knowledge and knowhow. Thinking for a Living talks about managing knowledge workers, this book helps you to understand what 'knowhow' is. It is not simple, and often very un-obvious where and with whom it resides in an organization.

Great KM Systems Template

The authors wrote this book 178 page book in 2000--it is still very relevant in 2004. Not only is this book clearly written providing a wealth of content on KM systems, it is also provides a very practical and realistic template for initiating a KM system.
The final chapter was a wonderful summary of the practicals to implementation:
-start small
-business problems relates to knowledge (loss of customers and key personnel, low win rates on service engagements, poorly designed products, etc.).
-a knowledge system is more than technology. You may start with an intranet and Lotus notes. More than a third in $, time and effort on the tech part, you're neglecting the other key factors.
-Getting content will take a while. It's easy enough to put the technology in place but getting the organization contribute and use content is a behavioral challenge. So, assess the culture of your organization before launching a knowledge initiative.
"What makes knowledge valuable to organizations is ultimately the ability to make better the decisions and actions on the basis of the knowledge".

About the Author

Dr. HANIPH A. LATCHMAN is Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Florida. A Rhodes Scholar and Senior Member of the IEEE, Dr. Latchman is the recipient of numerous teaching awards and has published over 180 technical articles and four books in the areas of control and communication systems and networks.

Dr. SRINIVAS KATAR is Principal Engineer at Qualcomm Atheros, Inc. and has extensively contributed to the development of HomePlug AV, IEEE 1901, HomePlug Green PHY, and the HomePlug AV2 standards. He is an inventor of more than fifty issued and pending patents.

Lawrence W. Yonge III is Senior Director of Technology for Qualcomm Atheros, Inc., chairs the HomePlug Technical Working Group, and is an inventor of approximately 100 U.S. patents issued and pending.

SHERMAN GAVETTE was a Principal Scientist for Sharp Laboratories of America prior to retiring. While at Sharp Labs, he was a member of the HomePlug Powerline Alliance board of directors and was vice-chair of the HomePlug AV Specification working group.

If you are into HomePlug AV this is the must-have book.

This book authored by a group of academics and Qualcomm employees. They set themselves the goal to provide "a clear and simple overview of key features of the HomePlug AV specification and the associated IEEE 1901 standard". Bringing clarity and simplicity into a complex specification is a tall order, and indeed the authors descend into the acronym-laden details. (The acronyms are listed and referenced in the Appendix.)
The structure of the book is quite logical, working through the layers and "planes" that make up the HomePlug specification, starting with the physical layer and ending with network formation and security. Two more chapters are dedicated to MAC features and Management Messages. Finally the book is rounded with concluding chapters, each a dozen or so pages long, on both HomePlug Green PHY™ and the next generation HomePlug AV 2.
If you are into HomePlug AV this is the must-have book.
