Harmony for Computer Musicians, by Michael Hewitt

Home music producers now have access to a wide variety of software synthesizers, samplers, and FX devices on their computers -- devices that had previously been available only in expensive hardware forms. Although computer musicians often show a high degree of skill and expertise with the technology they use to produce their music, many mistakenly assume that this is all they need to produce quality tracks. Yet there is often a vital ingredient missing: a useful knowledge of the way the language of music actually works -- an understanding of the ingredients of music and how they are put together; what scales, chords, modes, and keys are; and the principles of arrangement, melody, and harmony. In other words, computer musicians may have learned how to use their instruments, but this does not necessarily mean that they know how to create professional-sounding music using those instruments. This book was written to help computer musicians grow in their knowledge of musical harmony, knowledge that is essential for the skilled creation of complex musical works. Topics include intervals, tonality and the key system, part writing, triads, tonic and dominant harmony, modulation, and modal interchange and harmony. Techniques are taught using the tools computer musicians are most familiar with. Rather than using a conventional score format, most of the materials are presented in the familiar piano roll format of computer music sequencing programs. For practice, the companion CD contains numerous short exercises that will considerably improve the musician's skill in the art of musical harmony.

This second book in Hewitt's trilogy is by far the best
By Saltillo
This book is probably meant for one target audience. Fortunately, I fit that target profile when I read this book. This book is not a book about using your computer to make music. This book is a crash course in music theory for the aspiring computer music producer (CMP) who has the bad fortune of coming to computer music production without a solid grounding in music theory. If prior to aspiring to be a CMP you spent years of your childhood in piano lessons grinding through your major and minor scales, while periodically performing Fur Elise at piano recitals to the nodding approval of your proud parents, then this book is not for you. If you aspire to be able to read music by sight while playing a musical instrument live, this book is not the best place to learn. On the other hand, if you have a sharp, mathematically inclined mind, a good ear for sound, and have made the decision to learn to use your computer to program and produce electronic music, but have never learned to play an instrument or read music, then this book is a good starting point. You will not learn how to use your computer to make music with this book. The assumption Hewitt makes is that you will figure out on your own the hardware and software set up needed for your chosen "instrument." But this book is a crash course in music theory. If you use the book the way I used it, it will really set you on your way. It will teach you all the fundamentals. When I read this book I spent hours calculating for myself with pencil and paper and training myself in front of a keyboard to know all of the major and minor scales, the chords, and the logical chord progressions. I did not become a piano virtuoso. But that is not what I aspired to learn from this book. Instead, I got to the point where I could tinker with a MIDI controller to create and combine into an aesthetically satisfying whole all of the parts of my compositions by "instinct" (more like internalized memorization of fundamental principles learned from this book). It also got me up to speed to the point that I could make edits to MIDI files on my computer without having to hear the changes first by trial-and-error. Just by understanding what was taught in this book, I often know what my composition options might be if I am particular dissatisfied with the way the note on the 3rd beat of a bar sits in relation to the rest of the sounds in the composition - I can just try out a few of the "logical" options and pick the one that best works for me. The book is an invitation to think, memorize and internalize everything Hewitt is trying to teach you. And if you take the time to really "get" it, you will be rewarded by much greater confidence and competence in planning, designing, programming your musical compositions.

One final caveat: if by chance you find the material gets very tough very quickly, follow Hewitt's advice and go back and read the first book in his trilogy: Music Theory for Computer Musicians. This second book assumes prior knowledge of - and therefore only provides a very quick overview of - the material covered by the first book. In my case I skipped the first book and allowed myself more time to fully digest the contents of the first few chapters. In hindsight, my own education could have gone more quickly if I had just taken the time to work through the first book first.

BUY THIS BOOK
By Vince
Honestly it was way more informative than I thought it would be. This book is full of information and is potentially one of the best things I've read in terms of learning music theory. This book is NOT for anyone who is not taking learning harmony seriously. I highly recommend this book to anyone learning music theory and getting better at harmony, especially those who are interested in making EDM. Most of us music producers never quite grasp music theory and just put some notes together hoping it will sound good, but once you understand the information in this book you could write an entire song not even listening to it, and know exactly how it would flow, where the chorus is, and have a nice dramatic endings. I think Mozart read this book, or wrote it. 5 stars all the way!

Study and Learn
By Man in the Street
With good, clear prose and practical explanations, Dr. Hewitt makes an unambiguous case for study, study, study. Well, I have learned, learned, learned and I am very happy with my purchase. Be warned, this is not some lightweight little book. It is nearly 300 pages long and there's not a wasted word in it. As its description states, it facilitates "an understanding of the ingredients of music and how they are put together." It is for people who enjoy learning and its author's love of music is evident throughout.

The swell season: A text on the most important things in life (International fiction list), by Josef Skvorecky

In the six tales of The Swell Season, Skvorecky traces the libidinous ardours of young Danny, a teenager growing up in the forties. These wonderful tales, full of wry humour and unexpected plot twists, seem to add up to a fond portrait of an innocent era - this is, however, wartime Czechoslovakia, and the fragile world of the adolescent falls under the shadow of the Nazi presence.

From Library Journal
Danny Smiricky, already known to Skvorecky's readers, is obsessed with jazz and with girls. His vain pursuit of six provincial beauties is the basis of these stories, set during the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia. To win over these girls, Danny does their homework, sets up elaborate schemes to be alone with them, even engages in modest anti-Nazi action. But things always go wronga girl's father interferes, the courted girls gang up on him, he is upstaged by a less notorious young manand he is left with only his music as consolation. While Danny's erotic pursuits are at times humorous and his adolescent wistfulness is captured accurately, this is a minor work of the acclaimed Czech emigre author of Engineer of Human Souls ( LJ 7/84). The book of loving
By Westonjm
The Swell Season is one of the loveliest books I have ever read. It is the story of a young man searching for intimacy with the lovely young female friends of his small hometown during the Nazi occupation of Chekovslovakia. The young girls listen to his lovely musical overtures, but they never give in. Danny loves them, is fascinated by them, and he never fails to tell them this. But he never seems to be able to convince them to yield to him. But they all want to be loved by him. They revel in his love letters. They are jealous when he seems to favor others. He is there perfect lover...pure...and never to be had.

If you like Milan Kundera check out this author. He speaks of human folly with humor honesty and tenderness. He addresses major human issues with incredible specificity and with a little more sensitivity than Kundera. Enjoy.

Tough Choices: A Memoir, by Carly Fiorina

Behind the headlines—one of the most talked-about business leaders in the world tells her own story

By accepting the CEO job at Hewlett-Packard, an iconic company that had lost its way, Carly Fiorina confirmed her status as the most powerful businesswoman in America. But she also made herself a target for everyone who disliked her bold leadership style and resented her rapid rise.

For six years, as she led HP through drastic changes and a controversial merger, Fiorina was the subject of endless analysis, debate, and speculation. She appeared on the cover of every major magazine and her every word was scrutinized. Yet in all that time, the public never got to know the person behind the persona.

Tough Choices will finally reveal the real Carly Fiorina, who writes with brutal honesty about her triumphs and failures, her deepest fears and most painful confrontations—including her sudden and very public firing by HP’s board of directors.

It’s an amazing life story: Fiorina was a liberal arts major and law school dropout who didn’t even consider a business career until her mid-twenties. But soon she was blazing through big jobs at AT&T and then Lucent Technologies, with a growing reputation as a creative, hardworking, visionary leader. Her career path would have been remarkable for anyone, but in an industry dominated by men, it was unprecedented.

Tough Choices shows what it’s really like to lead a major corporation in a time of great change while trying to stay true to your values. It’s one woman’s inspiring story, along with her unique perspective on leadership, technology, globalization, sexism, and many other issues.

Amazon.com Review
For her six years as CEO of technology giant Hewlett-Packard, Carly Fiorina was one of the most public faces in business, consistently chosen as the most powerful woman in corporate America. But after being ousted by the HP board of directors in early 2005, she stepped away from the spotlight. She returns to the public eye with her new memoir, Tough Choices, the story of her tenure at HP and of her unprecedented--and unexpected--rise to the top. While much of the early attention to the book will no doubt focus on her battles with the HP board and her dismissal--and she lays out her side of that story in full detail--what is more likely to give her book a wide and lasting readership is her account of the choices she made to get to that point. As she says, she never expected to become a captain of industry; she never planned to go into business at all. But what she found, as she tells in a straightforward, personal style, was that she had a talent and a taste for working with people and making the kinds of decisions that business leadership requires. In a series of "tough choices" that give her book its name, she gravitated toward the most challenging paths that were offered her. Those choices, which many around her told her not to make, were what led her to the top in record time.

She visited the Amazon.com offices to give a talk to our employees about the book before it was published, and we were so impressed with what she had to say--and the open and focused way she said it--that we wanted to share some of her visit with you. Click on the image below to watch a section of her talk that explains what fear and choice have to do with leadership:

Watch Carly Fiorina talk about Tough Choices

Two Tough Choices

We also asked her to tell us here about two of the many tough choices she writes about in the book:

Amazon.com: Why did you decide to drop out of law school, and why was that a hard decision?

Fiorina: I went to UCLA Law School mainly because my father was a lawyer and he encouraged me to follow in his footsteps. From the very first day it left me cold. Although I could respect the law, I felt no passion for it. I had terrible headaches every day and barely slept for months.

When my father came to visit, I told him I hated it. He was concerned, but he didn't want me to quit. He had always taught me that quitting was the same as failure--you stuck it out, even in a tough situation. And so, although I had planned to tell him I'd decided to leave law school, I didn't. I went back and stuck it out for another month.

Then I came home one weekend to visit. I was in turmoil. As dramatic as it sounds, I had an epiphany while taking a shower on Sunday morning. My body had been trying to tell me something with all those months of headaches. I suddenly realized I had no idea why I was in law school at all. At twenty-two, at that moment, it finally dawned on me that my life couldn't be about pleasing my parents.

I think of that as the day I grew up. I had made a truly difficult decision on my own.

Amazon.com: Tell us about the time when you were a junior sales person at AT&T, and you had to choose whether or not to attend a meeting at a strip club.

Fiorina: One day my senior colleague, David, let me know that the two of our most important customers were coming to town for a meeting. I was delighted. It would be great to have my first introduction to these customers come from a veteran like him.

The day before the meeting, David came to my cubicle. "You know, Carly, I'm really sorry. I know we'd planned to have you meet the two directors. The thing is, they have a favorite restaurant here in D.C., and they've requested that we meet there. It's the Board Room. So I don't think you'll be able to join us."

This didn't make any sense to me, until someone else explained that the Board Room was an upscale strip club for businessmen. Between acts, the young women who worked there would dress in see-through baby-doll negligees and dance on top of the tables while the patrons ate lunch.

I was both very embarrassed and very anxious. I sat in the ladies' room to think about it in private, and worked myself into a state of near panic. I had no idea what I was supposed to do in this situation. I couldn't tell myself it didn’t matter--it clearly was important to meet these clients and to convince David that I should be taken seriously. It never occurred to me to be outraged and demand that they not go--and that wouldn't have worked anyway.

Finally, I went to David's desk and said, "You know, I hope it won't make you too uncomfortable, but I think I'm going to go to lunch anyway. I'll meet you all there." You could have heard a pin drop in the office as everyone watched this scenario unfold.

What happened the next day at the strip club is a funny story, but I'll save that one for the book.

[Signature]Reviewed by Robin WolanerFiorina may have had tough choices, but readers have an easy one: start at page 150 and read the Hewlett-Packard story first. As Carly Fiorina, the famously fired CEO of HP, vividly dissects the company's business, board and structural problems, her management views and talents are clearly visible. She also makes a compelling case for why she deserves some credit for the 2005–2006 turnaround. Less compelling are her claims that her introduction as CEO of HP was marred because "the one question we didn't prepare for was the question most frequently asked... about my gender." (Uh-huh.) When Fiorina dishes the board members, it's delish, especially when citing George "Jay" Keyworth's stated belief that "anyone who had leaked confidential Board conversations to the press shouldn't be allowed in the boardroom." (A wonderful irony since he initially refused to resign during the recent HP scandal when he was revealed as the source of confidential leaks.) Much of what Fiorina writes about the board will be in the news around this book's release, but her revelations are valuable beyond gossip—because shareholders are demanding accountability from boards, it's fascinating to be inside a deeply dysfunctional boardroom. And it's just plain fun to see her settle some scores. The start of her memoir, however, is a tedious telling of her rise through the corporate ranks at AT&T and Lucent. It's not clear exactly what the business challenges were—the main thing she emphasizes about Lucent is her fondness for the "bold, red logo." These early chapters are filled with numbing passages: "In other words, our value-add would be to get everyone on the same page. Any organization is stronger when people are aligned to act together, instead of working at cross-purposes."While I didn't come away with a sense of Carly Fiorina's personality—much of what she writes about herself is unconvincing—her book does shed light on the complexities of running a giant corporation. I also learned that I'd bought into media coverage of Carly Fiorina that was superficial at best and misleading at worst. I owe her an apology for that, and she owes her readers one for not hiring (or heeding) a good editor to make her message more riveting. Review
A very engaging read.... Many readers will identify with Fiorina as she describes her rise from a solid middle-class background and her life as a loving and dutiful daughter.... Chapters dealing with her meteoric rise through Lucent are excellent: Women will find them particularly interesting as she lays to rest the myth of the glass ceiling.... Not unexpectedly, half of Tough Choices deals with HP, and it will surely be a must-read for employees and friends of the company. -- Business Week

Fiorina wrote the book herself, without a ghostwriter, and it's well-written.... When she talks about her own life and how she dealt with the challenges that she faced, we get a glimpse of the human behind the PowerPoint presentations. Readers who buy the book hoping to learn more about her personal life won't be disappointed. Nor will those who want to understand how her childhood and family life influenced her choices. But this is a book about work, written by a business leader whose work was her life. -- Forbes

Most executive memoirs--even the good ones--are sunny to a fault. In their retrospective accounts, heroes like GE's Jack Welch or IBM's Lou Gerstner win most of their battles, thank the many subordinates who helped and offer sage advice along the way. But what if a former boss decided instead to write a really snarky book, sharing all the nastiness--the back-stabbing, grudge-holding and rival-bashing--that must be part of life at the top? What would it be like? We no longer have to imagine. Carly Fiorina has written exactly such a memoir. -- The Wall Street Journal

Ms. Fiorina is at her best when recounting the travails of a woman in a male-dominated business culture.... [She] is also good in her psychological descriptions of the constant betrayals that occur in corporate bureaucracies. The woman that emerges from these pages is cultured, sensitive and vulnerable, even as she acts tough. -- The Economist

Much of what Fiorina writes about the board will be in the news around this book's release, but her revelations are valuable beyond gossip-because shareholders are demanding accountability from boards, it's fascinating to be inside a deeply dysfunctional boardroom. And it's just plain fun to see her settle some scores. -- Publishers Weekly

The memoir of fallen HP leader Carly Fiorina, once America's most powerful woman chief executive, paints an unsparing picture of internal power struggles and gender politics.... The book breaks with the anodyne genre of corporate autobiography that is typically long on management philosophy and short on personal revelation. She pulls no punches criticising former colleagues, board members, and underlings. -- Reuters

[It] reads like a business soap opera, with Fiorina casting herself as the misunderstood, embattled but earnest heroine.... But Tough Choices also dishes. It is part Kitty Kelley tell-all, part CEO autobiography. The book casts fresh light on the personalities currently embroiled in the scandal over HP's investigation into boardroom leaks, which has resulted in criminal charges. -- San Jose Mercury News

Tough Choices: A Memoir by Carly Fiorina is VERY enlightening!
By Jane Nixon White
I'm very glad I took the time to read Carly Fiorina's memoir, Tough Choices. I feel I know her after reading it, and am even more certain than I already was that she would make an excellent President of the United States. She is a leader who understands the importance of making the right decisions, even when that might be unpopular. She knows how to be fiscally responsible with large amounts of money, and how to organize and manage many groups of people, always considering the best outcome for everyone involved. She understands coming to consensus, as well as the art of compromise, and keeps her actions and attitudes positive, without the typical back biting we've unfortunately come to expect from politicians. The fact that she isn't a politician is one of her greatest assets, in my opinion. Perhaps she could bring a new, positive meaning to the word politician, which would be very welcome. Go, Carly!!!

Great insight into a business career
By Camerons
I first read this book about 7 or 8 years ago when it first came out. I re-read it last week (combination of our CEO recommending it a year ago and her bid for the presidency of the U.S.)

First off, I'd recommend this book for young people getting started in business. Fiorina shows a lot of candor in her learnings from her early career. I got a lot out of it from her rise from an academic geek majoring in medieval history (OK... not quite, but close) to her journey to leader in AT&T/Lucent. She shares what she firmly believes are the challenges, mistakes, and successes that catapulted her to a leadership role. Much of what she says is really helpful for those wanting to succeed in business, Maxims such as doing the best you can on what you are paid to do - and not worrying about what comes next. Asking a lot of questions from people, you learn a lot, and they generally value sharing their knowledge. The recognition that there is a lot of politics in business that isn't always geared toward the bottom line. The realization that focusing on the riskiest, most "needed" projects can be an abject failure but can also lead to the most valuable successes... and on and on.

Now... a couple of disclaimers. I didn't work for AT&T nor HP. Many of the insiders disagree with her viewpoint. As such, I value what they have to say and will fully admit that you should look at those older reviews and not just the current ones. There's no one to tell the "counter story". I did work in that industry (Telecom) and overlapped with Fiorina and the challenge and the headiness rings true. Secondly, the HP saga dominates the last third of the book. She wrote it right after she was ousted. I didn't get as much value out of this part - it dragged - and she obviously had it all still fresh in her mind.

So... why 5 stars? Because the first 160 pages or so are a great learning experience for anyone wanting to understand the business world. I've had successes and failures - and most accounts hold back more than Fiorina. Also.. her writing style is easy to read, to the point, and reflects her viewpoint very clearly.

I can't tie it to her presidential campaign - the book is a business book.

Carly got a bum deal!
By Barbara McArthur
Despite what Carly says, the firing by HP did leave a big mark in her life, and she does tend to go over and over it. I think those who aspire to work and succeed with a large coporation will learn a great deal from this book. It's not only one woman's tough climb that's informative, it's also how the corporation, HP, works - which may be similar to other corporations. It's obvious to me that HP didn't give Carly the credit she deserved for bringing the company to a new level. Essentially, they handed her the reins and said, save HP, and when she put the machinery in motion to do just that, they criticized her for going ahead without consulting the Board as much as they wished. She got a bum deal, but it's time to put that aside and put all energies into the new task at hand! I like her, and enjoyed reading her story.
