key insights to optimize training and playing effectiveness

This is an outstanding book. This is probably the best book i have read on training and playing effectiveness. A self critical player who is motivated to work independently and improve will find his insights invaluable in order to prioritize training and development efforts. This is a methodology book without a recipe, but full of actionable insight and concrete guidance. For instance, how to assess your own playing strength and style, how evaluate your opponents, how to factor in psychological dimensions to playing and training, time management, repertoire selection, etc. This book will help you both manage your development and your resources, be it books, computers, or even coaches. A careful read of this book and rigorous self application of its implied methodology will enable you to obtain key strategic insights on how to train and how play that might take years to develop on your own. If you want to take a break from your regular training and reassess how you are playing and training and figure out what to do differently and better this book will be an invaluable asset.

There are some good insights on events and players

There are some good insights on events and players, a pleasant read and not so heavy on the analytical side of Dvoretsky's usual style. Don't get me wrong, I love ALL of the material Dvoretsky writes but this book lightens it up a bit, which is ok. The focus is more on his observations and his work with players and friends plus foes.

Modocs, settlers, and others who followed--sheep ranchers, homesteaders, cave discoverers, tourists, spelunkers, and US Forest Service and National Park Service managers--have played prominent roles in creating the region's, and Lava Beds National Monument's, always evolving human history.

A lava beds introductory gem of a book

This book by my friend and longtime Klamath Falls newspaperman and historian, Lee Juillerat, is a wonderful introduction to Lava Beds National Monument south of Tule Lake at the California/Oregon border. It is a national park managed by the National Park Service and is filled with fascinating geological phenomena, as well as being the site of the 1873 Modoc Indian War which historians have described as one of the most significant Indian wars in American history.

Lee's book on Lava Beds National Monument is easy reading and is well supplemented with an array of very interesting photographs of the lava beds. History buffs will particularly enjoy the chapter on the Modoc War which includes historic photographs by Eadweard Muybridge and sketches by William Simpson.

If you are interested in, or planning a vacation to Lava Beds National Monument, Lee's book is an introductory must. And if you find the Modoc War particularly interesting, please consider also buying my own book on the Modoc War. titled "Modoc Vengeance" and listed here on Amazon.

About the Author
As the urgency of our global situation becomes apparent, more and more readers are turning to the books of Idries Shah (1924-1996) as a way to train new capacities and new ways of thinking. Shah has been described as "the most significant worker adapting classical spiritual thought to the modern world."

Shah was educated in both the East and West, by private tutors and through wide-ranging travel and personal encounters - the series of journeys which characterize Sufi education and development. In keeping with Sufi tradition, his life was essentially one of service. His knowledge and interests appeared limitless, and his activities and accomplishments took place in many different countries and in numerous fields of endeavor.

Shah was Director of Studies of the Institute for Cultural Research, an educational organization sponsoring interdisciplinary and crosscultural studies of human thought; a founding member of the Club of Rome; a Governor of the Royal Humane Society and the Royal Hospital and Home for Incurables; and the founder of publishing house Octagon Press.

Shah's landmark book, "The Sufis", invited readers to approach Sufi ideas and test them out. The evident and common sense made it clear that here was a sane, authoritative voice in the wilderness of the gobbledegookish mysticism of the sixties. The lively, contemporary books on traditional psychologies, literature, philosophy and Sufi thought that followed established a broad historical and cultural context for Sufi thought and action. These have so far sold over 15 million copies in 12 languages worldwide and have been awarded many prizes. They have been reviewed by The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Times, The Tribune, The Telegraph, and numerous other international journals and newspapers.

University and college courses throughout the world are employing Shah's books, or works based on them, in a wide variety of disciplines including sociology, psychology and literature.

In 1969, Idries Shah was awarded the Dictionary of International Biography's Certificate of Merit for Distinguished Service to Human Thought. Other honors included a Two Thousand Men of Achievement award (1971), Six First Prizes awarded by the UNESCO International Book Year (1972), and the International Who's Who in Poetry's Gold Medal for Poetry (1975).

According to his obituary in the London Daily Telegraph "it is impossible to assess his influence, and his legacy is incalculable".

He was, it is said, the Sufi Teacher of the Age.

The instrumental function of Shah's work is now well established among people from all walks of life. Stockbrokers, scientists, lawyers, managers, writers, physicians, and diplomats have found Shah's literature for human development "extraordinary".

PREFACE

A book of 200 pages may contain nothing of any value at all.

Another may contain as little as one hint, one fact, which is of supreme importance to readers.

Most books could be better written, and very many of them are padded in order to produce a length which the author, the publishers--or the readers--(or all three) regard as worthwhile.

This book contains material which, if expanded even in the most acceptable way, could easily fill many hundreds of pages. Such expansion, however, would not necessarily be of any use.

If you are influenced by some prestige-content in a fat book, this book is not for you, for you will be disappointed because it is not crammed with words.

If you could, however, have benefited just as much from seeing the same materials printed in pamphlet form, then you would not have thought that you needed to read this book: you would already have the information which it contains, and would not be reading books like this.

If you can take its message and apply it, while benefiting from its handling qualities, bulk and unspoken communications: this book is for you.

ETERNALISM AS A VICE

People often shuffle restlessly when you talk about spiritual techniques being of value for a limited time, merely for attaining specific objectives.

But the reaction is only due to the infantile desire for 'something permanent' which is so vague that they have in that part of themselves failed to distinguish between what needs to be permanent and what not only does not need to be but must in fact not be permanent: unless it is to become a barrier when it is no longer needed.

It is, of course, this primitive desire for 'permanency--in the wrong sense--which is played upon by people who peddle externalist panaceas.

A technique or a working hypothesis dies when it becomes thought of as a rule or a law. A permanent apple which could not be consumed would not be much use for nutrition, no matter how pleasant a plaything.

Oversold

I rewrote my review on December 7, 2016.

I gave up reading Shah's books at the end of 2000, and with time my perspectives have changed considerably. I now feel obliged to point out that Shah terribly oversold his version of Sufism. He promoted it as a path to metaphysical knowledge. Considering my own experiences and what I saw of other students of Shah's, at best his books express a very elegant and literary belief system or psychology. Had he been content to convey it in those terms, I could give it more support and better reviews today. Since he didn't, I can't. I can only warn people away from this bait-and-switch.

Agree or disagree, much food for thought...

The word "Sufi" still elicits a range of reactions from the mystified to the parochial to the impractical, and you will likely view this book accordingly, unless you actually read it. In a curious way, it assumes that you are seeking an understanding of your motivations, and of life in general, as if "Sufi" were an everyday preoccupation. Yet, without attempting to define "Sufi" in any direct way, "Knowing How to Know" will likely challenge your assumptions regarding most any approach to knowledge that you have ever undertaken.
If this book is to be believed, any real increase in understanding requires fundamental changes in characteristic patterns of our thinking, patterns of which we are typically unaware. However, the complexity of our minds means that each of us has unique needs that must be satisfied before effective changes in our thinking can occur. The process is not hit or miss, but involves human operations as precise as any required in the physical sciences, including all of the elements of love, action, and attention to which we are appropriately disposed. "Knowing How to Know" lays out, in very stark terms, just how we might hope to apply these necessary requirements to aquire deeper, broader, and higher knowledge in our own lives.

For some odd reason this book is his best. at first it felt like it was a hodgepodge of letters from people , random thoughts on subjects and articles he wrote that didnt fit in other places but looks are deceiving . this book has some of his most mature thoughts he cuts deep to the bone in this one unlike all his other books it gets to the point. i enjoyed it for some reason this feels like his last book before he died

An American living near Venice, Donna Leon has crafted an imaginative series of mysteries set in the waterborne city, all starring police detective Guido Brunetti. In this, the fifth installment, Brunetti sets out to investigate an assault on an American archeologist who herself is investigating a museum exhibition of Chinese antiquities. The moods of Venice and the reflections of the canny, emotional detective are the most affecting qualities of the book.

Intelligent and charming Guido Brunetti, the commissioner of police in Venice (seen before in Death at La Fenice and Death in a Strange Country), continues to confront corruption in his fifth adventure. His moral anger pervades and gives substance to this mystery, from its peripheral incidents to the resolution, in which the villain explains all and which occurs in the rising waters of the title. Investigating an assault on American archeologist Brett Lynch, Brunetti wonders whether the two men who beat her are simply homophobic (Lynch's lover is a popular soprano) or, as Lynch suggests, whether they were trying to prevent her planned meeting with museum director Francesco Semenzato. Five years earlier, Lynch and Semenzato brought a touring display of Chinese antiquities to Venice. Recently, Lynch, on a dig in China, saw the same pieces and realized some had been replaced by fakes. Brunetti's sources suggest that Semenzato's interests in antiques are more diverse than is proper for a powerful museum director, but there's no opportunity for a confrontation: only four days after the beating, Semenzato is murdered. As Brunetti wends his way around the insider's Venice and through accumulating information (not all obtained entirely honestly), he also deals with his superiors, his wife and teenage daughter, all the while remaining the thoughtful, sensitive sleuth readers have come to expect.

Leon, author of four Venetian mysteries, returns with a fifth. All feature Italian police commissioner Guido Brunetti, and all are rich in local ambiance and intrigue. In Leon's latest tale the worlds of opera and art intertwine when an archaeologist, whose lesbian lover is an opera diva, discovers that an exhibit on Chinese ceramics is full of fakes. Set amid the background of winter flooding in Venice, Acqua Alta is a subtle study of emotion and character. Anna Fields does a masterful job with the rich Italian and Chinese vocabulary and provides an enjoyable narration, but her performance is marred by her impersonation of male voices, which seems forced and distracting. A sophisticated mystery; purchase where the author's works are popular. Recommended. -Ray Vignovich, West Des Moines P.L.

Donna Leon fans should rush to Amazon.co.uk!

"Aqua Alta" is another splendid, can't-put-it-down engagement with Guido Brunetti. I despaired of reading any more of Donna Leon's fine prose and carefully crafted plots when notified last year that publication had been cancelled of a forthcoming book. Led by a note in another review, I checked out Amazon.co.uk, where I found "Death of Faith," "A Noble Radiance," and the book I just finished, "Fatal Remedies." Each is as good or better than its predecessor. I remain a dedicated fan. (Be aware, "The Anonymous Venetian" was published in the US with the title "Dressed for Death.") Also, some of Leon's works that are out-of-print in the US are available in the UK.

Our Family's Favorite "Inspector Brunetti" Mystery

Of the only 5 (out of the 13) Donna Leon "Inspector Brunetti" highly atmospheric Venetian mysteries that are readily available in the U.S. at popular prices, this newly available paperback is our family's favorite. Read the dramatic first chapter and you will be hooked all the way to the end, perhaps the most satisfying climax (and the most action) of all her Brunetti ouevre--though, true to Leon's vision of Venetian politics, still somewhat ambiguous and certainly not pat. (Note: it is helpful but not essential to have read "Death at La Fenice," the first Brunetti mystery, which is also easily findable in the U.S. in paperback and which introduces two main characters in "Acqua Alta.")

I recently discovered this mystery writer and am backtracking to read all her books. She never fails to deliver a wonderful read. Her picture of Venice and its society and politics is piercingly honest and although she shows all that society's warts and corruption, there is a sense of objectivity and compassion in her telling and in her police commissario, Guido Brunetti. An avid student of the Word of God, I have bookcases and shelves and now a iPad filled with the classics and new authors as I search for more on His Presence... This book did not speak to my intellect, it spoke to my soul. I found myself moved to tears. If you are a student of Tozer and Ravenhill, then you most certainly will want to read this.

Even though this is small to read, what is in there is impacting to how a true revival comes on earth. As I spend much time of the Hebrides Revival, this collaborates on research from other websites what truly happened in these islands. Good, yet not good enough.

This book gives plenty of background into international finance. Unfortunately, it has some big flaws, in my opinion. First, there are not enough calculation examples. Second, there are too few questions at the end of each chapter. In addition, you must go to the author's website for the solution. Once you get there, you will be surprised to find out that the author has only solved maybe two out of eight problems. That's annoying. I do not recommend this book. Take a class from another professor who uses a different text book.

This book sucks!

Ok normally when you buy a book they introduce you to a concept and then they solve a problem for you. You then solve a similar problem to show you understand it. This book has problems at the end of chapters that were not even subject matter in the chapter. This is obvious in chapter #1 problem #1-#5. I know the professor will say you are an MBA student figure it out. I agree with this, but show me the concept and then let me figure it out. I am appalled at the quality of the information in this book. Sickening!

Book Not worth the Money Paid

Too much money for a useless book!!!!

I strongly agree with the two reviews previous to mine. The book gets you interested at the begining, but let you down afterwards. It has little depth in the topics and many flaws when comes to explaining things. In exemple, the "Fisher Effect" was never explained, but all the book gives you is the formula. There is little explanation about the components and variables in the formulas. So, you have to rely heavily on your instructor.

There are almost no calculation examples and use of formulas. The teory in the book is not well explained either. So, you get more confused. That in my opinion is because the authors did not spend enough time to present the material clearly and the editors did not review and edit the book to increase the readability and comprehension. To illustrate what I am talking about, there is a lot of white space in the book (implies it lacks substance) and the text refers to graphs or charts shown in one/two pages before or after. Compared to other finance books I had in the past, this whole book looks like a compilation of bad summary sections.

In conclusion, it was not worth the money. It got me confused and wasted my time. In case you have to use it because it is mandatory, rely on your notes and instrutor's lectures.
