The Wisdom of the Pearlers

The format is a good help with first an introduction with information on each of the sources and then the texts from them. The author seems to concentrate mostly on the ascetic writings from these sources. It might be helpful along with this book to read Sebastian Brock's The Syriac Fathers on Prayer and the Spiritual Life. For Isaac of Syria Hylarion Alfeyev's The Spiritual World of Isaac the Syrian would help, and for Ephrem of Syria Brock's The Luminous Eye: The Spiritual World Vision of Saint Ephrem the Syrian. All are published by Cistercian Publications.

Excellent material

I can't believe anyone would say one negative thing about this collection. It contains some of the more advanced writings on Christian mystical experiences available to the general public. If you've been studying contemplative prayer and wondered what experiences to expect as prayer progresses, this book is more of a "tell all" than any I've read. Most autobiographies or writings on prayer by the saints discuss the mind dropping into the heart and then say things like "and then all heaven breaks loose", etc. Or "but these mysteries are not to be spoken/written/shared with the general public". If you are serious about contemplative prayer you do not want to miss this book. The "sapphire light of the mind", are you kidding me? If the Philokalia excited you, this will as well. The other reviewer with issues about the book must have had personal concerns or worked for another publishing company. This is really good stuff.
