In the Footprints of the Masters
By Conrad J. Obregon
It strange how the passage of time can change what one expects from reading a technical book. When I read the first edition of this book in 2010, I was quite impressed by it. The second edition is still a worthwhile book for the serious photographer but it didn’t bowl me over. Maybe it’s that I’ve become accustomed to thinking about the way that Ansel Adams, Edward Weston and Elliot Porter might have used modern computers and software to effectuate their vision.
The book is divided into three parts: technical foundations; light, composition & the art of seeing; and the digital darkroom-editing, processing & printing. Rather than provide a continuous running narrative, Frye takes smaller ideas, like exposure and histograms, and offers a few pithy paragraphs of discussion, illustrated by his own photographs. When it comes to the digital darkroom, the author emphasizes the initial processing in Lightroom, which back in 2010 hadn’t become the preliminary (and sometimes only) post-processing tool of choice that it is today.
Frye’s ideas don’t go into detail in most cases, so the book really can’t be said to be one for learning the fundamentals of technique, composition or post processing. Instead the author provides general instructions about how to use tools to achieve results similar to Adams, Weston and Porter. To appreciate these instructions one will have to learn the fundamentals elsewhere, but given that most basic books don’t spend much time showing the reader how to use the tools available to make aesthetically pleasing photographs, there is still much to learn from the author’s abbreviated instruction.
I found the discussion of the application of the zone system to digital photography to be interesting, and I particularly liked the discussion of extending the range of light in Lightroom and Photoshop by a variety of methods, although I wish Frye had been more enthusiastic about using Lightroom’s merge to HDR function, which I have found particularly useful for creating realistic HDR images.
Because the book emphasized color photography, but relied upon the techniques of Adams and Porter, I was hoping that the author would quote Porter’s allegation that Adams had chided him that color work was not real photography.
Since Frye was probably not responsible, I will chide the publisher for the index. Some folks will clearly use the book as a reference, but although there was an entry for Lake Powell, which appears in a single image, there was no entry for HDR, which is an important subject of the book.
This is a good book for landscape photographers who want to improve their images.
Note: The publisher provided me with a review copy of this book at no charge.

Great Book!
By John Murphy
I like this book a lot. It really reinforced a lot of information that I put together from other places but was always unsure because there is so much conflicting information out there. This book did a great job of being useful, succinct, and easy to learn from. There are a lot of references in this book to Ansel Adams (one of my all time favorites) and since I have some of his books as well it was easy to get a little more depth about some of the topics from Ansel's point of view as well. I have a lot of photography books but this is one of my favorites.
